Questions from someone still slogging through the approval process
You are in for the adventure of your life!
I had a lap RNY and found the recovery to be pretty easy. I did take the whole 3 weeks off that I had planned, more because I wanted the medical clearance from all of the docs involved before I went back to work. As for pain management, once I came home I think I took one pain pill- and that was to sleep at night. Most people have a little more pain in the incision that the camera goes in- but it too is doable!
Emotionally it is difficult at first. You don't realize how much of your social life and things revolve around food ( going out for lunch, meeting a friend for dinner.....) That was something I had a difficult time with. I am getting better at finding other activities to do with friends- either that or I just go and drink something. The people here on the board are really good about helping you get through that period of time!
As for exercise, I started walking very short distances and time the day I came home from surgery. At first I would go for 5 - 10 minutes- by the time my doc cleared me to go to a gym I was able to do 20 minutes pretty easily. You will be amazed at how much you will start to enjoy moving your body.
As for preparing- start eating your protein first, small bites, take a full 20 - 30 minutes for meals, wait 30 minutes between eating and drinking, get rid of soda, and really read food labels. It sounds daunting, but the more you practice the easier it becomes.
Good luck on your approval process- keep us all up to date!

BTW, one of the best things you can do for yourself pre-op is to start going to the Saturday coffees. They are are a great resource and support system!!
Am guessing you're having a lap RNY but not sure...
I had an open Duodenal Switch on 12/23/08 and have never, ever had surgery before. I have had no issues with pain per se. My tummy has gotten sore, but that is why they send you home with pain meds I guess. I only take them at night to help me sleep during this recovery period.
Plus, having an open incision, I did not have all the gas buildup in my abdomen cavity from the laparoscopic surgery. I am quite honestly very happy about that.
I have shed some tears this first month but more happy tears than anything. Just the realization that my day finally came and I came out a LOSER!!! Such a wonderful feeling to know I am putting my obesity behind me once and for all. However, the emotional part is not just in the first month. My pre surgery visits with the psych...she told me to expect major emotional changes every 30 pound loss.
The only exercise I am doing this early out is walking around the house and up & down the stairs.
Tell us more about your situation. Are you approved? When are you planning to have surgery? etc.
p.s. - Welcome to the MN Board!!!
