Food question

I had my RNY on Aug 7. I have been able to eat regular food for about 2 weeks now. My Dr. wants me to eat beef, pork, chicken etc.. but I find after about 2-3 bites that it sits in my stomach and just hurts. He suggested that I use sauces with the meats so that they will go down smoother, but that just does not help. Is this a common thing?  It is gettig to the point that I just do not want to eat if I have to hurt all the time. Chicken salad, eggs and soft foods do not bother me, but he really wants me to try not to rely on the soft foods. Any suggestions ?

It shouldn't hurt to eat.  If you are chewing your meat to MUSH and it still hurts....back off.  You have the rest of your life to eat meats.  Get your protein in where you can whether it be eggs, cottage cheese...whatever.  Some folks are slower in healing and need extra time.  This is not a race....your body will tell you when it's ready.

Just my advice...take it or not!

Good Luck!

I am 6 months out now and have the same problem w/ meats, I will throw up chicken everytime, otherwise the other meats after a couple bites it feels like someone punched me in the stomach. I wonder if I am not chewing enough? If I grind up the meat it seems a little better, funny- the one thing I should have (protein) I can't tolerate, but potatoes and noodles and such go down much better!!! I was told getting the meat in even if it's ground up is better than not getting it down at all. Good Luck!!!

This has been the best decision besides marriage and kids that I have ever made!!

I agree with Lori, don't ru****  It could be the meat you are eating is dense and it fills your pouch.  If you eat more than your pouch can hold...it will hurt.  The softer food tends to go right down.  Get your protein in via eggs and the softer foods, then finish off with a bite of dense meat.  Eventually you will be able to tolerate more.

If you are chewing your meat so that it feels more like pudding going down, you shouldn't have any problems.   I have found that I really can't do white meat chicken anymore, I have had to re-learn to like thighs and legs.  They are much more moist and don't cause me any trouble.  Otherwise I do try to use some kind of sauce - gravy, some good 'ol MinneSOOtan cream of mushroom soup, etc....

But I third the motion - don't push yourself.  Try bites here & there, you'll know when it goes down well.  Just be sure to CHEW LIKE THE DICKENS!!

(If you can do tuna, that stuff is LOADED with protein!  I like it with a little LF mayo on crackers...)

I am really chewing until I can't chew anymore. It may be that white chicken meat just does not agree with me either. Time will tell I guess. I have no problem with fish at all. That just may be my protein of choice for a while, and yes I love tuna ! I am just getting a bit discouraged right now...with the protein problem and the fact that I have seem to have plateaued and I just can't seem to get past it. I work out every day, only eat my 3 meals a day and drink my protein drinks to get in all my protein and still nothing. I am quite perplexed. What makes me crazy is all the "outside" people who have never had a weight problem and who think that I should have lost 100 lbs by now. It gets quite irritating. I have never known a person to lose 100lbs in a month and  1/2. I thought 52 was pretty good ! I have decided that I am not going to tell anyone how much I have lost anymore. I personally just like to go by how my clothes fit, but have been weighing just to see if I can get over this plateau.  I have to stop and laugh sometimes about the people who say that the surgery is the "easy" way out.  I don't know about you but I work just as hard if not harder than people who have not had the surgery and then we have to deal with the eating dilemas. It's crazy the way people think. The surgery is a tool and we all know that....i just wish everyone else would get it.  Wow, sorry for ranting....   :)

No apologies, we've all been there - thought that.

As for 52 pounds in a month and a half?  THAT KICKS SOME SERIOUS BOO-TAY!!!  And it just goes to show, you can't fix stupid.  I would think if someone were to lose 100 pounds in that amount of time, they'd have some catastrophic illness, not a healthier lifestyle.

I gave up sharing my weight loss numbers with "normal" people a long time ago.  The clicking of the calculators in their heads as they tried to figure out how much I must have weighed before was DEAFENING!!!  Having your clothes fit better (or worse 'cuz they're too baggy!) is a great way to judge your progress, 'cuz...

(Let's hear it, everyone!!!)

... if you're not losing pounds, you're losing inches!!!

Any and all "meat" (aside from lunch meat) I eat needs to be moist. chicken breast.. cut up or sliced up or whatever- still can't eat it... All meat I eat needs to either be cooked in some kind of cream of something soup, or moist like taco meat is. I am 3 1/2 mons out.  I still rely on alot fo canned chicken & tuna, I eat fish, and I eat seafood.. shrimp ****tail too!

I can chew chew chew all i want to and even have it in some kind of sauce, and chicken will still make me puke.. I've found only canned or ground works... and still needs to be wet!

Its very common to have texture issues from what I hear. My sister is 3 yrs out and cannot eat any form of red meat other than ground hamburger (again, taco meat texture)...

Hope that helps..

Stacy
