Headaches with the liquid diet

I started a liquid diet yesterday and ended the day with a horrible migraine.  Has anyone else experienced this (getting a headache while doing the liquid diet)?  If anyone did get headaches were you able to find eating something in particular would help to get rid of them/prevent them from happening?

This is what I 'ate' yesterday:

2x high protein shakes (in the can)
1x slim fast meal-on-the-go shake
1x Strawberry Banana nonfat protein smoothie from Starbucks
1x can of cream of mushroom soup (98% fat free)
1x low calorie Gatorade
30 oz. of water with Crystal Lite
70 oz. or more of regular water (unflavored)

Then my head started to hurt soooo bad so I thought I have to have a quick sandwich for some carbs cuz' I figured my body was going through bad withdrawals of carbs which was giving me a headache.  So I made a cheese sandwich on lite whole wheat bread (2 slices) with 2 slices of 2% american cheese & light mayo.  I tried holding off all day (without eating any solid foods) but when my head hurt as bad as it did I thought I should try some carbs to see if it helped.

Should I be doing something different?  I'm thinking of running to the store today to get ingredients to make more smoothies at home (with protein scoops added) and also picking up more broth based soups.  I'm just worried about the headaches and wondering if I should add more carbs somehow??

If anyone has any tips or ideas I sure would appreciate it!!

Thanks!

Just an idea...

were you a big soda or coffee drinker? Could perhaps be a caffeine withdrawal perhaps?

I had already been cutting out the soda from my diet to prepare for the surgery & I don't drink coffee.

Did those of you post-op cut all the soda out of your diet before your surgery?  Maybe, since I still was drinking an occassional soda, I should try a small amount of diet soda (with caffeine) and see if that helps with the headache?  I just wasn't sure if I should make sure I get ALL the soda cut from my diet before having surgery.  Not sure what to do????

Your headaches are due to your body going through withdrawl- carbs, sugar, caffeine, salt.. all the bad nasty things we are addicted to pre-surgery. Your body is going to fight you any way it knows how to while detoxing and going through withdrawls.

I know the headaches suck. But you're on a liquid diet for a reason.. try to not eat solid foods..  the purpose of the diet is to loose pre-surgery belly fat as well as fat around your liver so the surgery is that much easier for the surgeon to do.. and in turn on you.

Caffeine was a major source of addiction pre-surgery for me. I went off caffeine cold turkey and it was the worst few days ever.. and you'd be surprised how much crap we're addicted to in soda.

DO NOT ADD MORE CARBS!!!
The name of the game on the liquid diet is to DECREASE CARBS.. to as little or none as possible. You shoudl be on a HIGH PROTEIN liquid diet... Add protein to whatever you can.  Please try and push through.. the first few days are the worst but remember.. you're detoxing your body for the best outcome you can get for surgery.

Its up to you whether you want to go cold turkey or wean yourself off caffeine. I found cold turkey for me the only way it was going to happen.

Good luck... keep us posted how its going. You just have to plow through it and do it!

wow...you sure you weren't drowing in all tha****er!  I have a hard time drinking my 64oz a day, you topped it out in the hundreds of ozs!  You are going to rock after surgery!

I didn't have any headaches during my liquid phase but I did not drink sodas with caffiene, I did however drink coffee, but just one cup a day.

I think sometimes it is the sharp shift in what you are eating that will bring on a headache, I hope that today is better.

Thankfully I love water (kind of became a way of life to ward off migraines over the years) so I don't have a problem drinking lots of it.  What does become inbearable is the headaches.  I woke up with the same migraine I had last night & eating that sandwich really didn't do anything to get rid of the headache.

I will weather through this!!  No more solid foods, I can do it!!!

Some good news is I got on the scale this morning & I lost 3.2 lbs. since yesterday morning.  So, thankfully I'm shedding some of this water weight.

I'm going to head out to the store & pick up some 'supplies' to make some yummy protein shakes so hopefully the rest of my time on the liquid diet won't be so 'bland'.  I'm going to use some of the suggestions, for protein shakes, from the 'Before & After' book, plus I LOVE the strawberry banana non-fat protein shake from Starbucks so hopefully I can find a way to re-create it here at home.  My hubby just bought me a new blender (as a gift for my upcoming surgery) so I wanna give that thing a try & see if I can whip up something yummy to help get through the hunger & head pains.
