Question about protein shakes
All the protein shakes and smoothies from Alan's post sounds wonderful, but as a Pre-Op I have a question -
Do you drink the protien shakes as meal replacements?
Since it is liquid does it fill you up, or go right on through?
Are you able to drink say all 8 oz or whatever it is at one time?
I assume you are using protien shakes because they are an easy way to get in yoru daily protien?
Ok that was more than one questions - but I'm full of them

I don't drink protein drinks as meal replacements. I have one on the drive to work, and then have cottage cheese as breakfast at about 9:15. At 11:15, I have another shake and then have turkey & cheese and some veggies at 1:00 for lunch. At about 3:45 I have another shake and then have dinner with family, you guessed it, more protein. I don't normally have anything after dinner.
Liquid seems to fill the pouch, but leaves soon after for me. I have yet to feel hungry.
I can also drink the full amount over the course of 30 minutes.
One thought, I don't count protein drinks toward fluid intake. Just toward the protein.
Ask all of the questions you need. That is what we are here for-to help each other.

Marilyn,
Initially in the early stages the protein shakes/drinks of course serve as meal replacements and over time as the variety of food choices grow and solid foods are being introduced, the shakes play a lesser role. Many surgeons would prefer that the majority of protein come from food sources rather than shakes. Now, that being said the question of how to use protein shakes is really one of personal preference and choice. Protein requirements vary from patient to patient. Some may have a daily of goal of 80 grams and be able to meet their weight loss and/or maintenance goals. Others (such as myself) have much higher protein requirements because of the necessity to build muscle mass and maintain weight once goal weight is achieved.
Regarding liquids. In the beginning sip, sip, sip. As you heal, you'll be able to drink more liquids in shorter amounts of time. Some are never able to gulp water again. But over time, many patients are able to return to drinking normal amounts. Once completely healed liquid flows through rather quickly - and it won't keep you full for any significant amount of time.
Everyone is unique and handles different proteins, liquids and food in different ways. What you tolerate one day may make you sick as a dog the next
So take the advice and experiences that we share with you with a grain of salt...what happens with one may not happen to another.
Best wishes!
