My name is Marla and I am in the first stages of getting the ball rolling. I attended a seminar in St Louis this past Saturday. Looks like it will be something insurance will cover. Would like some words of encouragement from those who have had the surgery and adivce on how to deal with a family member who is afraid for me to have the surgery.
Thank you. Will talk more.
First of all welcome to the board. Hope you like it and want to come back. To deal with a loved one that doesnt want you to have surgery. Get them involved and make shure that they know all there is to know about it. Take them with you to meetings and things. let them get to know lots of other people that have had the surgery. Once they are informed enough they will see that it is surgery that helps not hurts. It is the best thing i have ever done for myself. I am lots older than a lot of people but being 65 does have its benifits in that if i can do it and it does wonders for me how much more it does for younger people. I started out at sizes tight 22/24 and am now 51/2 months out wearing size 10s in most everything. But also no more high blood pressure, was borderline high cholesterol, borderline diabetic, none of that exsists now. Praise God. Jan
Marla,
My husband was a little iffy about the surgery when I first started. He thought I could just eat as if I'd had surgery and lose the weight. RIGHT!!! Anyway, he came to the informational meeting with me and that helped and then he went to a support group meeting with me and he became my best supporter of all. He hadn't realized how much it would improve my health. He just kind of thought it was a vanity thing, I think. Anyway, when he found out it would cure my type II diabetes he sat up and took notice. And now five weeks out from surgery I take no more diabetes medicine, no more hypertension medicine and no more high cholesterol medicine. That is so great. I've lost weight, don't know how much because I had hubby hide the scales that I was becoming a slave to. But, I feel so great, move better, just am in better health.
It's not a magic bullet, you have to work hard making sure you get enough protein and water in and walking/exercising. BUT it is so worth it to be healthy again. Focus on what it will do for your health and lifestyle, the looking better is just a bonus!!!
Hugs and love and come back often.

Marla I am post-opp starting my 4th week, and yes I would do it again now...to me the surgery was not to bad , its after you get home for the first 4 weeks has been the hardest, I am not hungry but you have to get the protein in, because the protein shakes started making me sick and gag.. but most people dont have this problem. So the wondering if I am getting enough am I getting to much..so if you like the protein shakes it would be a breeze for you..just be sure you read read and read, because no one reacts the same to surgery...and yes my daughter was not for it, She is now going to have the lap-band..lol... and like they say you will be more healthy... I am off all meds.except blood pressure and it is cut down to 10 mig. daily, they said they will take me of that when I lose more weight.....God bless you on your journey its exciting....Vesta
Hi Marla, welcome!! I had surgery in STL (6 month postop) and would be willing to chat with you about these issues, as I had them too. I am out the door to work, but if you would like to email me I can better respond [email protected], and then if you like, we can meet.
