LOW PROTEIN=DAMAGED HEART!!!

Something I thought should have been brought up last night with the talk of how some longer-term post-ops don't get their protein in......this is NOT for you "Newbies" so don't let this scare you if you are just out from surgery as there's no way to get all your protein in somedays and this is a long term affect, not short term. Anyway.........when your body is lacking protein over a period of time, it steals it from your muscles......what is the heart? A MUSCLE!! There was a young girl, in her 20's who was an OH member and she had a massive heart attack after she'd lost all her weight and was enjoying her new life. This happened because her body attacked itself to get the protein it need....she was not following the plan of eating post-op. She was merely at a family reunion and collapsed with no warning/died right there, before help could arrive. THIS IS A SERIOUS issue that I'm afraid some do not realize just HOW serious it is. You can't live on carbs.....you MUST keep trying forms of protein until you find on you can tolerate. Try new protein drinks, lunch meats, different fish/seafood.......and just because it didn't go down well last week, doesn't mean it won't today. PLEASE take this seriously and give your body what it needs before it causes irreversable damage. WLS was such a drastic step to get hte weight off, to have a new lease on life, don't waste the second chance you've been given. This is to no one inparticular at all, just a message I think needs to be refreshed in our minds now and then. Sometimes we get in ruts with certain foods and forget to really look at what we are eating. If this is you.....JOURNAL so you can track your protein/carbs and find where you need to be. Hugs! Tami

thanks Tami i think that is a really important point and should be really emphasised so much to everyone. It is a dangerous thing. I know a girl right now that is 6 months out had her surgery a few days after mine and she has more or less bragged that she doesnt see the big deal about protein she doesnt get hers and has lost a lot of weight. oh Jan if she doesn't read this board, maybe you could share this story with her. Some folks just do not realize how serious it can be. Tami

Hi Tami-thanks for posting that info...yes, I am a newbie-my 3 mos is March 1st, but I have always tried to get all my protein in, even before surgery-although there are days that I didnt-I KNOW its SO IMPORTANT...I now find myself getting 1/2 from the protein drinks, then eat a couple of protein balls every day and then the rest from food. I still have a touchy pouch-but if I get sick, I try it again in 2 weeks or so, and there are times it is frustrating to me, but I have resolved that as long as I make sure and get my protein in, I will be okay....(and my water, and my vitamins LOL) I also wanted to thank you for the vitamin tip. I am going to buy them on Friday~I think you are doing awesome-and I look up to you, because you do care and even after being that far out, you know its still important to take care of yourself and you are a good example to all of us-so thank you!!! Love, Janet

ahhhhhh Janet you are makign me blush!! Thanks though...and although my vitamins may not work for everyone, they have worked great for me and saved me some money by using the prenatal to get the B's in. For anyone reading this, I take the prenatal vit from Sam's and it has all the B complex but you'll still need a B-12 sublingual or shot. THen I also take 3 calcium citrate a day. We need calcium in that form. Your doing GREAT Janet!!! Seeing you before pics compared to NOW is an amazing transformation already!!! Kepp it up!!! hugs, Tami

Good job Tami!! Everyone needs to read that! Although I had Lap Band and most of you others had RNY, protein is very important to us all! Might be a little strange but thats all I crave right now...protein! I use to be a junk food junkie with carbs and sweets being my thing. Now, I look forward to my protein drinks! Especially the Delicious Strawberry that Melissa sent me! Thank you again girlfriend!! We have to eat heart healthy anyway because of the hubby bad ticker! Thanks for the reminder tho!! Deb M

Deb, that Delicious Strawberry (is it ON) is what I use in my fruit smoothies. If you like fruits try them blended with ice and fruit in the blender. I'm drinking one now that has strawberries and bananas and a low carb yogurt with ice. mmmmmmm! And I go through stages with teh cravings....somedays it's carbs, somedays it goes hr to hr and seems I have a craving for all sorts of different things throughout the day. This week I seem to have a good hold of my cravings though and I hope it continues till I get back to my goal weight. Feels good to not feel out of control for the first time in a while!!! hugs! Tami

Yes Tami..it is the "ON" brand and it is yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmie!! Well, at least the delicious strawberry is. I haven't got brave enough to try the chocolate one I bought the other day! I will try adding the smoothies! I have one question on those smoothies though...how much of what to how much of what? Deb M

Debbie, here's what I do and I do change it up now and then. First I put in one container of low carb strawberry/banana yogurt. Then I add my fruit, total of about 2cups ( use frozen fruit and thaw 50%) then I add about 1 cup of juice(low-sugar), then 32oz of crushed ice and blend until smoothe..then I add 4 scoops of protein powder. and I only blend long enough to mix it up good or it does get frothy....first I use a spatula to fold the protein into the smoothie before turning on the blender. If this is too much for you blender, empty half of it into another container before you add the protein. then make it like 2 batches. I can fill 4-5 20 ounces styrofoam cups with this all in one blender full. Then I freeze them to takk out when I want one. 1 minute in the microwave thaws them enough to enjoy. I've made them choc. before too but they aren't as good to me. I use carb countdown choc milk when I make a choc smoothie and sometimes a low carb vanilla yogurt and sugar-free choc syrup and ice. Get creative!!! Tami
