Hi Bev, Well the way I read our manual about sugars is to be very careful after an RNY on how many sugar grams you intake. 4 gr wouldn't bother me - I have eaten up to 13 grams in a cup without dumping or becoming ill. But I think I am way luckier than most on here - I haven't ever really Dumped anything (yet) After surgery you just have to be really careful and aware. I suppose since you are still on your 6 month pre-surgery it would be a good thing for you to start doing now then you'll be Really ready and good at searching for things you can eat afterwards. Hope this helps! Pat B.

Bev, the way I see it, the problem with many foods such as snack crackers is not just the actual sugar, but it is also how the carbohydrates in the foods are digested. And many of those are metabolized as sugars. I have heard, and have espoused myself -- and wish i would have listened to myself a bit better -- that it is best to stay away from the 4 deadly whites -- white flour, white sugar, white potatoes and white rice. Now, if you're really wanting some sort of something, like the aforementioned snack cracker, I'd suggest sticking with maybe some sort of wheat cracker.

Bev also note on there what it says is a portion,,,,if it says 7 crackers have 4 grs of sugar and that is all you want to take in only have 7 crackers. Also be sure and check the carbs. they are as bad for you as sugars. My ditition said most of the time you are better off just using the fat free saltines maybe 4 i think she said. I too get to craving things that are crunchy . try to get baked not deep fried things. and whole wheat if possible.

Bev, Especially at first just give up sugar. Probably trying to find something sweet that you can eat is how we got to where we need surgery anyway. If you just tell yourself, "I can't have sugar, white flour, white potatoes, white pasta and white bread", you'll find it much easier. That just simplifies the whole thing. Remind yourself that you don't "need" those things. If you want something sweet, eat SF popcicles. If you want crunch, eat celery or carrots with a little peanut butter. Just learn that you will not ever eat the way you did before and start practicing now!!! Also start exercising now so that you will be in better condition when you have surgery. This is for the rest of your life. The easier you make the rules (more strict) the better it is for you. I, personally, cannot remember all those net carb things so I just don't eat things with carbs. I look at labels, get confused and just stick with the things I know are OK. I can eat unsweetened applesauce, peeled apples, veggies, fresh fruits (watermelon is good to me). But I don't eat any kind of chips (white flour and potatoes). Are you understanding why my rules are easy for me. I do eat baked sweet potatoes with butter, yes real butter, and brown sugar Splenda and I know there's a little sugar in that but I use a tiny little bit. Believe me when I tell you that your tastes will change when you have surgery. You just won't want sweets so much - I promise. The main thing is to remember that it isn't really hard. Just eat protein first and there isn't much room for other stuff. You will do fine. And, I find it easiest not to even have those white foods in the house. Hubby/children don't need them either. Be good to yourself - you're the best friend you have. Hugs, Lana
