No RNY for me

Hello everyone.  I have my first consulation  meeting with the surgeon.  Five minutes into the meeting I knew my surgery was in trouble.  I expected this but held out hope that it would work out.  He flat out told me that it would be too dangerous to do the RNY. The Lap-Band is a go so I'm talking to myself and trying to be positive.  For the past 6 months I have been learning everything about the RNY and I was more than comfortable with the surgery.  I know very little about the Lap-Band, so I need to get busy and research the surgery.  Are there any Lap-Banders in our group?  I check the Lap-Band forum as it's not a very active group, at least compared to our group here. All but one of my pre-op requistions are complete,  but now the surgeon wants a sleep study so I'll go on Tuesday evening for that.  The surgery will be done around the end of August, once they receive the written approval we will move forward. I havent had a lot of computer time lately, but I will try very hard to catch up today.  Take care everyone! Trudy

what weere the reasons for him saying that it would be too dangerous?

A lot of surgeons , I hate to say , are doing the lap bands becasue the are quick and they can make as much off of them as the other and there is a product being sold there that as we all know they get kick backs from.

Not to discourage you but that is why a lot of them are pushing them.  We do have several lap banders on here and some are doing really well others arent.

Trudy, I don't understand that reasoning.  Why is RNY too dangerous for you.  Your BMI is not as high as some folks I know who've had it.  I know your surgeon may have a good reason but I wouldn't just automatically let one Dr. change all my plans.  Maybe you need a second opinion.  We're a nosy assertive bunch on here.  Many times we have let folks walk over us because we were overweight. If you don't like the reasoning, ask more questions.  Hugs, Lana

Hi  Trudy The lap band is less evasive then the other . Your recovery time should be quicker . I was banded on5/ 14 I have lost around 30 lb.  From what I have read  RNY isn't for every one .The band may be a slower way  but with the right restriction the results will be the same  Don,t be disapointed at least you can get some help. I know several people  with bands . and all are doing fine I hope this helps. Good luck on your sleep study , I got my machine  a year a go. Thats what made me look in to weight loss.      any other questions just write. I will help if I can. PAUL

Hi Trudy, I have been wondering what in the world happened to one of my angelettes-I even posted a missing in action-am relieved to see your okay....Now-I have a couple of questions for you-since your surgeon is saying RNY is too dangerous-did he speak to you about the sleeve or any of the other options comparible to the RNY? I dont understand why he is telling you that you strictly have ONE option???? Is it due to your BMI? I weighed 438# at the seminar and when I went for my consult-I was told that unless I lost roughly 40# and got my BMI below 60-I would not qualify for the RNY and would have to have the sleeve. Well, I lost 44# and had the RNY-but I have known people who had even higher BMIs than I did-and who had the sleeve-and have been every bit as successful as the RNY patients-the one reason I am not happy with him MAKING you have the lap-is what IF that is truly NOT what YOU want?-and with the slower amount of weight being taken off-it may take you a year to acheive the same results that you would get with the RNY in 3 months. I am 7 months out and have lost 165#-with a HUGE portion of that coming off in the first 3-4 months....Im not slamming bandsters, trust me-but I really think its crappy for a surgeon to give you ONLY one option and it NOT being the option that you wanted, had researched and such....How did all your other tests come back? Did everything go okay with testing? Help me understand this-or ask the doctor more questions until you are comfortable. I really want you to be 100 percent comfy with your decision because this DOES affect your life-and although the band is a lot less evasive, you will be going in for fills and what have you, as well-and to be honest-I originally picked the band-and when I found out I would have to do these fills, and do the port and things-I decided the RNY was the best for me, besides the fact that I needed the weight to come off in the beginning very quickly because of my physical limitations and because I was looking at being wheelchair bound full time.  Ok-I have prob overwhelmed you-this is not my intention-but rather to make sure that YOU get WHAT YOU WANT-not what someone else WANTS for you-right? I just want to understand his reasoning on the RNY-because its risky for ALL of us-and I think you understand those risks.....Thanks Trudy and hope to hear from you soon. All my love, Janet

Hi! I am bandster who is 3 years post op. I started at 368 on the day of surgery and am now 265. My bmi was 52. I was just wondering why the doctor only gave you the band option. The band has saved my life, but it is like watching paint dry as well. It is a very slow weight loss and I have to really watch what I eat. Junk goes down very easily. I love my band, but I also want to make sure that people have a good idea of the differences between the 2 surgeries.  Please email me if you have any questions!  On the main message board for Lap Band you can look up many questions you may have about it.  Best wishes and feel free to email me!
