Hello everyone. I am from Smithville, MO which if you aren't familiar with is a small town north of Kansas City. I have my appointment for my first visit to the surgeon. I want to have the lapband surgery done. The only surgeon covered on my insurance is Dr. Niazy Selim at KUMed. I want to know if anyone has been to this surgeon and what they think about him. I finally made the decision to see about weightloss surgery. I recently graduated as a RN and at this time am unable to work as one due to my backpain. I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I am getting ready to turn 25 and I am ready for a change. I am ready to loose weight and hopefully get into the dating world and meet someone and have children. I decided this is my year to change. Even if I cannot have surgery I am going to try my hardest to loose weight. My mother decided to have gastric bypass about 4-5 years ago and had good results. She lost about 140 pounds. I am scared to death of the gastric bypass because of the rerouting etc that is involved with it. To anyone that is able to have it more power to them. It just isnt my surgery of choice. Any information that can be given about the lap band or the surgeon Dr. Niazy Selim would be greatly appreciated. Best of luck to everyone!! God Bless. Christina

Christina welcome to the board, and congradulations on completing the RN program. I admire you for having the determination to finish your schooling.

I know nothing about the doctor you speak of but if that is the only one in your insurance co. that is covered i see that you have no choice but him.  so your mother had no problems with the RNY? and lost a lot of weight? then why are you afraid of it?  Let us know how you like your doctor after the consult ok? and stay on the board and let us get to know you. Christina, I wish you wonderful results.  I love KU medical center so you should be in good hands.  I, also, think you should consider that lap band will probably take you two to three times as long to achieve your goal weight loss.  It is only restrictive - you will still be able to eat anything you want and can still make sugar, fat and carb choices and not lose.  Give it some thought.  Dr. Hornbostel, in Sedalia, who does many, many WLS surgeries has stopped doing the band because he doesn't feel the results justify the risk.  Just my 2 cents worth.  In any regard, we're behind you no matter what you choose - you're too young and beautiful to live your life restricted by obesity. Hugs, Lana

"WLS is about making better choices, a healthier lifestyle and seeing how little you can eat.  Portion control is the key to all weight loss surgeries.  Bottom line - it isn't how much you can eat - it is how little you can eat."
