Need a physician to recommend WLS

Does anyone have the name of a good physician that would recommend WLS for a new patient? I am morbidly overweight and have been most of my adult life, but my physician will not authorize/recommend me for WLS; even though I have several co-morbidities that would qualify to for surgery. I am about 440 lbs, 5'9", and suffering from Type II Diabetes, Hypertension, Sleep Apnea, severe Arthritis (and probably Mad Cow's Disease :-) ), I've never regulary visited the doctor. Mostly because I feel like most doctors would take one look at me and assume that I don't care about my health and not want to waste their time.  And partly because until about 4 years ago I was in fairly good condition (or so I thought). Now that I am completely broke down (physically and mentally) and have an insurance plan that will cover most of the expenses, I don't know where to turn for help. Any feedback I receive would be tremendously appreciated.  Finally, I would like to THANK everyone that posts questions and comments on this website. Receiving information and reading the successes many have had has been so motivating and inspiring to me (especially when I am going through a moment, hour, day, or month of deep despair).

I dont know a good doc in the St. Louis area at all but can understand where you are coming from .Do you not have any friends in that area that have a good doctor. Anyone on the board in that area know of a good pcp that will give her a recomendation? Please help her find a good pcp.  Wanted to welcome you to the Mo. Board and hope you keep us informed of what is going on in your journey. and we will try to help you in any way we can.  Jan

I know how you feel --- I HATE going to doctors because I always think they are judging me because of my weight. My current Doc is not only NOT fat friendly --- he is plain NOT FRIENDLY. BUT --- he is all for me having this surgery and is willing to do whatever it takes thankfully. Find a new physician ASAP. Talk to friends, family and co workers to see if anybody knows of a "fat friendly" doctor. If that doesnt work -- take a chance and go visit one. If there is no good chemistry try another doctor. Although you feel really down and out, and I've been there...MANY times...remember you are FAR FAR FAR better off than you think...you have INSURANCE that will cover your insurance. There is not only light at the end of your tunnel there is a freaking rainbow girl!!! Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I'm 341 lbs and disabled from other medical problems--- but I thank God each day I have Medicare and they will cover my surgery!!! Even though I have to do a six month supervised diet I refused to allow my self to feel disappointment.

Make a plan and just take that ONE step...then the next...and the next. Keep coming back and keep us updated on your progress, trials and tribulations (there will be many)!

I don't know where in St. Louis you are, but if you're close enough, there's a doctor in Arnold you could see.  His name is Dr. Chadalawada (Dr. Chad is what everyone calls him).  His special field of interest is obesity, which is why I went to him in the first place.  Not only is he supportive of WLS, he's the one who put the idea into my head.  I was looking for pills, and he suggested looking into surgery.  You'd have to look him up, though, because I no longer go to him (I changed to a more local doctor).  My mom, sister, and brother-in-law absolutely love him, and they all say he listens to them.  During my approval process, I found that he does what he can to get you through to the next step.  He's worth checking out, even if it means a longer drive. Good luck! Pamela

Thank you Pam and Amanda for your advice and words of wisdom.  Sometimes I just need a little kick in the butt to get me motivated and my mind back on track. Pam, I will certainly look up Dr. Chad, thank you! And Amanda, I hope all goes well with your surgery and keep that positive, wonderful attitude. Be blessed, Wini
