What surgeon did you use?
Hi Lori.
I had my surgery the 19th of June and I had Dr. Stephen Scott out Missouri Bariatrics Services in Columbia, MO. He also practices out of Depaul in St. Louis and has an office by the hospital. I dont have the number anymore to the St. Louis office but if you call the Columbia office they would be happy to give it to you. Personally, I like the Columbia office much better. I live 10 mins away from DePaul but I wouldnt deal with its office. I had to have the surgery in Columbia due to St. Louis office not taking my insurance. After surgery I was supposed to get my after care here at the St. Louis office because of it being so much closer, (2 hours) they would not see me because of the insurance which I dont understand because according to Columbia your visits are Paid for in when they bill the insurance company in the beginning, they bill for the whole thing, follow up visits are paid in advance. So what the heck does it matter which office they see you in. But St. Louis would not even return the 6 different mess. I called and left, even when I was calling with really bad pains that turned out putting me in DePaul for 4 and 5 days two different times within 1 month of the surgery. I never saw Dr. Scott or anyone else from the bariatrics office the whole time I was in the hospital. From what I understood much later when I went back to Columbia for follow visits after giving up wait for someone to call me was Dr. Scott was out of the country both hospital visits, but you would think they would have at least sent another partner or at least have their nurse call me. I know alot of people have used Dr. Del a /torre, (sp) and Dr. Scott and they are both excellent Surgeons! There are others the above people who have mentioned are very supported he too. I found mine by reading what others here on Obestiy Help said. I think word of mouth is the best way to decide myself.
One other word about Dr. Scott, when I was reading what people wrote about him almost everyone said he was a superior surgeon and I totally belive that to be true, but I know what people were meaning now when they said he has NO bedside matter. If you are looking also for a surgeon who gives you the really care about YOU feeling,(dnt really know how to describe exactly what I am trying to say) you know like would call you back if you needed to talk, ask HIM a question or if you were scared before surgery and nervous some doctors I have had just make you feel like they truely care and also may joke around alittle with you to help make you feel better or more at ease.
Doctor Scott was NOT like that for me and quite a few people have said the same thing here. At the time I was thinking I dont need a friend I want an excellent surgeon, but now I realize what they were talking about and if you can find both I recommend that you do!!!
I didnt want to make this post sound like I was putting Dr. Scott down, or saying he doesnt care about his patients, (I know he does), or to upset people who do not feel the same as I do, but I look at this website as a place to, "Be honest about the things that you are going thru, went thru or are going to go thru. So I am just letting others get my opinion and that is all it is, MY opinion.
Good luck Lori, and welcome to the board!
Susan

Dear Lori,
I had Dr. Fearing in Columbia and I have never regretted that decision. She was not my first choice because I couldnt find a lot of research on her-I wanted Scott-but the wait to get into Scott was 3 months-so I took Fearing (BUT-Dr. Scott hand picked Fearing AND Ramashwamy-who are both women-if that makes ANY difference to you or not), because it was one week. I have never, in ALL of my life-met a doctor who was more loving, compassionate about what she does, knowledgable and her work and her bedside manner can NEVER be measured. I have had friends who have had Scott, Ramashwamy AND De La Torre-and what I liked about Fearing is I personally got to see HER at every visit-before surgery she met myself AND my family-she came into the pre-op room and was with me until the anesthesia hit-AND I saw her post op EVERY DAY ****il the ice storm hit Columbia) and even when she was snowed in-SHE personally called my room TWICE to check on me. I got sick post op after my drain was taken out and since I couldnt get back to Columbia-she PERSONALLY spoke to my PCP AND her office called twice to check up on me. I was so moved by her and the care she gave me-that I actually had angel wings tattooed on my back with her name running through the banner. I have worked in hospitals for several years and I never met a doctor/surgeon like her-and I have met several hundreds of them. Elisa C also had Fearing and she will tell you the same thing-and she is a nurse!!! Please consider her! She is with Missouri Bariatrics in Columbia, MO and their number is 573-882-5673. You MUST attend a seminar first-but they host several a month in different towns-so hopefully you can find one close to you! I weighed 438# (07/08/06), I had my surgery 11/29/06 ( I had a delay in my 1st visit due to my husbands health-not them) anyhow-I lost 44# before surgery and I have lost 135# since-totally 179# total-in a little over 10 months-and I couldnt be happier. They will give you your info packet at the seminar! Lori, PLEASE keep us posted. I have heard about Dr. Eagon, but I believe it takes a lot longer through them-I believe I heard somewhere that there was or is a waiting period of a year-and at MO Bariatrics-its not nearly that long. Good luck-and keep us posted-ok? Will be praying you find a surgeon you love-as much as I love Fearing-Janet
