My First Stranger "Opinion"

My very good friend is most likely going to be having RNY around the same t ime that I'm going to be having it.  I was told that "Weightloss Surgery for Dummies" is a good book to read prior to having anything done.  I passed this info along to my friend, and while we were at lunch today, we decided to go to Hastings to see if they had a couple copies of the book.   I found one copy, and asked the woman who works there if she could order another copy of the book.  She looked at my friend and I and said, "Is this for you two?"   We said yes.  She asked if we were going to have the surgery, and we said yes.  She then said, "Are you aware of how your life is going to change once you have this surgery." "Yes.  I've done a lot of research and I know it's going to be hard at first."  I answered, feeling a little annoyed. "Not hard, extremely difficult.  You wont believe how hard it is.  Why are you having it done?  You don't need it."  She responded.  At this point, by temper is simmering right below the surface. "Don't you think that's an awfully personal question to be asking someone you don't know?  Can you order the book or not?"  I asked, trying to keep some sense about me. The lady then procedes to tell us about her friend that had it done, and how it was impossible for her for the first couple of months and another friend who can't eat bacon, and the first friend gets sick, just smelling food....  I guess if SHE had had the surgery, it wouldn't have been as irritating, but that whole, I have a friend, who has a friend ,who has a boyfriend ,that said his cousin told him... blah blah blah... LOL I didn't ask for her opinion.  I didn't ask for her "expertise" all I asked was if they could order another book.  Am I being too sensitive or over reacting?  This is all new to me, I'm sorting out a lot of information and a lot of emotions.  The last thing I need/want is some stranger, working in the bookstore telling me what I should and should not do. Finally I said, "See that little boy right there?" indicating my son sitting in the cart next to me.  "I want to see him start school.  I want to see him graduate.  I want to see him married, and I want to hold my grandchildren some day.  My blood pressure, right now, is so high that I could have a stroke tomorrow and not get to spend another day with my son.  My BMI is so high, that I'm not living a healthy life.  That!  That is why I having the surgery done." Anyone else had to deal with something like this?  How did you handle it? Thanks for reading my vent!! ~Christine

Christine, yeah i think most of us that have had the surgery have had people to say and do all sorts of things that are just plain rude at times, We have all had to develope a tough skin and make our own decisions that we know what we are doing and know we want a life other than what we had...Dont let it get to you...just consider the source and go on with your own life and decisions.  We are here for you to vent any time you want to...stick around. we are for you and are on your side.
