cravings

My sister had RNY 2 1/2 yrs ago and I am planning for mid June for mine.  My question is does anyone have any strange cravings since surgery?  My sister craves ice.  She's obsessed, addicted you choose the the word.  She will sit and eat it with a spoon.  I give her trouble about it all the time, because I know its bad for your teeth.  She tells me I don't understand and to just wait and see.  We drive by a quarry every day on our way to work that has a large wall of what looks like ground limestone.  2-3 times a week she'll say how she'd love to get a handful of it and chew it up.  We've decided its probably a vitamin deficiency, likely iron.  My cousin (she's an RN) said its something called pica.  She said its the same thing that causes children to eat dirt, etc. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced these bizzarre cravings or any others????

I DID that when i was pregnate with my last child. i was really anemic then and so low on iron they were giving me iron shots as well as taking iron tablets too . she was born healthy as a horse but it took me a long time to get my iron levels up.  sorry i got off the subject and that was that while i was anemic all i wanted to do was eat ice.

You both hit the nail on the head.  I did some more reading on the web after I posted last night and everything I read attributed it to iron and anemia.  Thanks for your thoughts.  Have a great day! :)
