Protein Shakes - My Dietician Says No More!
I spoke with the Dietician for the New Start program (where I had my surgery) and she told me I should not be drinking protein shakes anymore, in fact I should not have been drinking them since 8 weeks out! It seems that everything I've read on this board says that I should be drinking them still and that some of you two years out or so still drink them.
I'm so confused, but will follow the direction of the dietician. Has anyone else been told this??? Thanks Renee
i know that a lot of people think that but you have RNY and that amounts to malasorption, that is partially why we lose weight , that only about half the food we eat do we get nurtionment from. OK if that is so and you need to get 60 grams of protein in a day, if you eat 60 grams that is probably only about 30 grams that your body is absorbing....to get 60 grams you will have to eat 120 grams,,,that is a whole lot of food for our tiny tummies. do your own reserch and check it out yourself. a lot of dieticians are going by a normal person and their digestive system. not ours. ....
I know 3 other girls that that is what thier dietician told them and they continue to lose hair and are almost bald and they are two years out ,,,those are the only people i know of that have lost major amounts of hair and it doesnt grow back.

all anyone has to know is the biology of how our digestive system works, and when you change that which is what we did when we had RNY you have to work with it....I will look for Traceys address. I dont know if i have it or not but wish i had copied that and kept it.

Now I am more cofused than ever. You would think that she would know - she is a dietician who specializes in weight loss surgery patients.
I did read Tracey's post about how whey protein is already broke down and it makes it easier for our bodies to absorb - it was a great post.
Maybe I should talk to my surgeon and see what he says as well. Thanks for all the info.
Any patients of Dr. Van Wagner's - have you been told this as well?
If she specializes in wls patients, then she SHOULD know, does she give you alternatives? what does she say you should be eating and how much? How do you know she specializes in wls? did someone refer you? i'm sorry to be direct but she doesn't sound like a professional to me, much less one who "specializes" in wls! go see someone else!! quick. I can understand her wanting you to watch the calories, and if your doing slimfast or something geared to weightloss instead of pure protein, then she would be somewhat right, we need protein for protein not weight loss, the most prtoein you get from slimfast (and other brands) of shakes are 20 grams, with around 190 calories, the powders have fewer calories and alot more protein, mine has between 23-26 grams, and the fruit ones have like 10 calories per serving. Make sure your on the same page regarding "shakes". Good luck , i'd be very interested in what you find out. Susan
Hey Renee, I know that if she is associated with the New Start Program she is supposed to be a specialist in WLS, BUT....we also know you cant eat that much protien in a day. Ask her what your supposed to be doing to get that much if you dont substitute with the shakes. Also ask her about the Isopure ready to drink? It is high whey protien with no sugar, no carbs and less calories. Maybe she just doesnt think the shakes themselves are good for some reason...???? Who knows but she needs educated on these facts. Good luck!

I don't post on mo but one time but seen your post and thought I would put my 2 cents in. I have heard many time where they have said to stop the protein drinks I went to my one year check up with my surgeon he asked what I was doing for protein and I told him and I told him I drink a syntrax protein everyday and he said that was great.
I use to go to meetings in Springfield IL before I had surgery and it was a dietitian counseling once a month required for their program. anyways at the end of the session we always talked about protein and how to get it and we have taste test on different bars and shakes and things like that to ensure we get enough. I have heard we need 1/2 our weight in protein and for me that is alot of protein.
Maybe she thinks you are getting enough for your body weight on your own? asking your surgeon would be a great idea.
sorry so long it takes me a while to get to the point.
good luck and find out asap so you don't do damage. I stopped for a week because I thought I could do it without and I was very sluggish and tired so I bought more that was about a month ago.
