I would love to talk to someone who has had the bypass. I am considering and am very scared to make the move. I have sooo many questions that I need answered by someone who has gone through the process. Lisa

Welcome, Just ask away. We all love to talk lol.And if one of us can't answer a question another one of us can. You will get lots of different answers to some questions because we all have different reactions to the surgery. So just start asking and we will start answering. Good luck on your journey.

thank you for responding...I have had the lap band placed and removed twice and now I am looking into the bypass. I was wondering what kind of problems if any that you all have had. I have two small children and want to be around for them and not have to be in and out of the hospital with other complications. Does anyone regret having the surgery? What kind of restrictions is there after the surgery, how long do you have to stay in the hospital after the surgery, any prep before surgery, do you have to have a barrium swallow (I can't stand to drink that liquid), anyone have the surgery at Des Pares, how painful is the post op, and how long do you have to be out of work?

Hi Lisa!!!  Ask any questions you might have.  It takes alot of courage to go through with this surgery.  It's a very scary thing & it's your life that we're talking about, so please ask any questions no matter how silly you might think they are.

How long in the hospital    Sugery Tuesday afternoon & Released Thursday afternoon

How much post op pain   Not a whole lot of PAIN, mostly achey & stiff

Pre testing        Just alot of bloodwork, I didn't really have many problems besides High blood pressure & found out that I was diabetic through the bloodwork they did.  I didn't have to have the scope or sleepstudy or anything else

Would  you do it again   Yes!!!  I have had some problems, but I know in the long run, life will be good!

Any complications and what were they   I developed an ulcer along my staple line, started vommiting blood & passing blood in my stools,  also became dehydrated twice & had a urinary tract infection (because I couldn't get in all my fluids)  I can't stress enough how important getting those fluids is.

Please don't let my complications scare you.  Complications are rare.  & stuff like that just happens to me.

Every doctor is different about your stay in the hospital, I had Dr. Hornbostel in Sedila 15 mos ago for my RNY. and I was in 2 days.
I had very little post pain but they gave me liquid pain med. The testing for me was..electrocardiogram, chest ex ray to check your lungs..blood work..and now they have to have a scope of tummy, hope I haven't left out something...

YES, YES  I would do it again.

I had no complications  with the surgery...

I was 67 yrs old and weighted 308 at my highest.

I fell great I don't feel my age at all...lol

Lots of good people on here to help you all the way so welcome to this board....vesta

Was in hospital 3 days with lap rny, usually a couple extra if they have to do it open. Not going to lie about my pain,But not everyone is the same and some breeze right on through with hardly any pain at all. My pain was worse than my 2 c-sections,gallbladder and hysterectomy combined. Those surgerys were nothing compared to the pain i had with my lap rny. But the older i get the bigger wuzz i become LOL.
Pretesting will all depend on your dr. Each one is different.
Only complications i have had so far was a drain site infection from haveing a drain tube, You maynot some dr's do not do drain tubes,
Would i do do it again?????????? You BETCHA in a heartbeat.

Hi there, my sister had the lap band a few mo's before I had my rny, and it seems as if our pain was comparable, of course it depends on if they find a hernia they have to repair (i did and it wasn't to bad) and what your health is like now. You know , since you've had the lap band twice, I guess you are pretty serious about losing the weight, so that goes in your favor, as far as eating, drinking post op, I think it is comparable to what you did right after the lap band. Just be sure and choose an excellent surgeon, I may be biased, but Dr Hornbostel in sedalia comes HIGHLY recommended, I don't think I have heard one negative thing about him since i've been on this board, he doesn't use the dreaded "drains" which seems to cause alot of pain post op from people (just read the posts!) and he goes out of his way (along with his excellent staff) to make sure you have all the information possible to make your descision, you are required to go to a seminar prior to even getting an appt. I would do it again in a second, in fact i'd do it all once a year if I had too. I haven't had any real complications, just low Iron that is being treated, just educate yourself on the surgery , and choose your surgeon wisely. I think foregoing a third lap band for a more permanent solution is the way to go. good luck and feel free to ask any more questions you have or repost the same ones if you need clarification. susan

I was in the hospital 2 days
post op pain for me was almost nil but i know that some do have pain. if you have a doctor that usese drain tubes it seems to affect the pain level more. they seem to cause pain.
mine Dr. Hornbostel doesnt use them
pre testing is like psych eval, scope, blood work, dont know what other doctors require and dr. H. has added stuff since i had mine.
would i do it again, only every year if i had to . dont reqret it for a minute.
i have had no complications but there are those that have , it is like any surgery it isnt without risk. but i have know those that had the lap band that had complications too.
can i ask why you had the lap band removed???
hope i helped some. maybe some of the newer girls could answer more questions for you. do you live close to Springfield? if so we are having a meeting tonight. and would love for you to come. i posted a message on the board titled   tonight , tonight. with directions.
