Level with me about soda

I know that my nut says no soda, not even diet. I am aware that there are theories and studies suggesting that diet soda causes weight gain in a round about way. I know that some people think it stretches the pouch or is just plain hard on the pouch.

So, I'm curious as to how many people actually have had some soda, be it diet or otherwise. Do you let it get flat? Do you dilute it? I'm not going to flame you and I don't want to be flamed for asking, but I am just curious if anyone indulges as an occasional treat?

I have. I got a diet pepsi with ice and let it sit for about 2 hours in my car and drank it on my drive home from school. No pain. I was pms-ing and really craving some soda. I haven't done it since then and don't really want to, but am just wondering if anyone else has indulged?

Yes I drink soda every now and then.  I never get the bottled soda because it's just wayyyy to carbonated for me.  I dink diet cherry limeades from Sonic every now and then.  Don't get me wrong I don't drink it often.  Maybe once every two weeks or so.  I mostly drink water water water and yeah more water.  I keep bottles of water in my fridge and refill them.  I do try to let it sit as long as possible to let the carbonation out and then this may sound silly but after I take a drink I pat my tummy to try to burp myself like you'd burp a baby.  I just try to take all the precaussion I can when I do drink it.

i have had one diet cherry limeade from sonic also but that was all 1 in 2 1/2 years....i dont really know but do know that it has always been one of my things and am afraid to drink it will get back hooked on it...

another thing i do know is that i know 3 people that drink it all the time and it is diet but all three of them got down to goal and then started back up ...one has gained back 60 pounds ,,,not worth it to me...my drink was diet dr. pepper but tasted one and taste like syrup to me....i think  it just isnt worth it just like trying to eat sweets arent worth it...try to get your mind to a different mind set , and i know that it isnt easy but can be done,,...after you get to goal then you can eat more or less anything but in moderation and remember nothing taste as good as thin feels.....   take care of yourself and oh yeah i just thought of something else.....the first 18 months after surgery is your best time for losing weight....really and truly true too. you can still lose weight afterthat but it takes a lot more work....love you girls...hope you all will all car pool and come to Peggys on the 19th...would love to meet you

Hey, I think if we were soda drinkers before surgery we all really want to try it again, but Im with Jan....WHY? I did, and probably wont again. I bought a diet A&W root beer and let it go flat for a few days (they have lots of carbonation) and then it took me a week to drink it. I would only drink small sips of it at a time.

From what my information said about why we are suppose to avoid it is because the carbonation is so hard on our pouch. And if you drink diet, flat and I bought something caffiene free....you really arent getting the "thrill" from drinking it like you did before anyway so Ive decided for me, WHY bother! lol!

It is just like all the other food decisions you will be faced with thru the years....YOU will have to decide what is important to YOU! If this is something that is really important enough, then find a safe and smart way of indulging yourself ****assionally) but I personally will have to deny myself that treat....lol! Oh and the other thing is avoiding the caffiene so every drop of liquid that we take in is hydrating us instead of de-hydrating us.

And again, like Jan, hope you get to come on the 19th....are you anywhere close to Peggy's?

Hey ladies, thanks for all your honest responses. I don't really have an issue with soda, nor do I plan on creating one. Although I did drink a lot before surgery. I don't think I'll ever keep in in the house again and it's not really too tempting when I eat out because I can't eat with my meals so I usually don't even order a drink.

I was just curious.

Thanks for playing along.

Oh, I guess I have missed all the discussion about Peggy's. Can someone fill me in?

Just wanted to reply to this post about soda.  I've heard to put a balloon on top of a open bottle of soda and set it in the fridge overnight.  You'll see what it does to the balloon!!

But the pouch isn't a balloon. It's not nearly as stretchy, and it has two openings. One where the food goes in (and sometimes comes back up) and one where it goes out. So it stands to reason that air from carbonated beverages wouldn't be trapped and unable to escape. You'd either burp or it would get pushed out the other way.

Just my reasoning. I could be wrong.

Regardless of the physiology, I do agree that soda is bad and I don't want to get back into that habit.

I would be very, very leery of drinking soda. I have heard that there have been patients who had the surgery, drank too much soda and ruptured their pouch and ended up with bad infections. I have heard that people can drink it way post op without a problem. I can't. I don't want to either. I figure that anything I did before surgery that got me to that point could not be good for me.

Be careful!
