The reason we aren't supposed to have liquids with our meals...

I've been wondering what the big deal is with us sleevers being told not to have liquids for at least 30 60 minutes after meals. I did a little research and found out that drinking fluids with meals can cause rapid gastric emptying - which can lead to dumping. Yes, sleevers can dump! Dumping is caused by  food going through the digestive system too quickly. Slider foods, especially simple carbs, are also culprits for dumping. So anyway, its good to know the actual reason for not drinking with meals - I am usually more compliant when I know the reason behind certain rules.

Just thought I'd share!

OMG thanks. today I was working and ate some chicken not thinking I was also drinking and I had to use the bathroom 3 times and the dump was not good. I was wondering why I was doing this.

It was not something that I usually was doing running to the bathroom but now I know why I will not drink like that again. Thanks for the post.

My surgeon gave me the tool. Now it is up to me to use it right.

I found this out the hard way. I took a gulp (A GULP) with out even thinking about i****er went down, food came up. And yes,  my surgeon told us to watch out for slider food****ting the gut too quickly.

I have to say I have drank with meals all along, and never had an issue (yet).  It's just a really hard habit to break.  I sit down with a water, not even thinking about it.

I admit I drink with meals quite often. I'm on my first week of soft foods and if I sip between every few bites it seems to make my tummy settle better. My stomach is completely used to liquids so I feel that it is helping me make the transition. I don't drink alot, but do have a few sips. I have not had any dumping ... hopefully I won't.

My nut told me that drinking with meals will help you digest foods faster (because it helps liquify it), thus making you able to eat more or becoming hungry again sooner. I have found this to be true. I have not experienced dumping syndrome though. Not sure why you'd be more likely to have that post-VSG than you were pre-VSG if you drank with meals.

Yeah, I'm guilty of doing it too especially when I've eaten that one bite over and I'm feeling miserable. Drinking a little bit helps to move it along.

I've seen my friend do this to be able to eat more on a special day like dinning out or attending a party......i think it's a way to cheat.

I sip a little bit when I nibble on some food.  I haven't had any problems.  I do not know what will happen when I'm further out and start eating real food again though.  Thanks for the information!

Whew! I am glad to hear there are others (successful others) who drink with meals.  I am only 2 weeks out, so to me its hard to call what I am eating a "meal" anyway!  And it simply seemed too difficult  to get in all the liquid i need if i have to stop 30 minutes before i eat and wait an hour after I eat!  So I have worked out a compromise with myself.  I don't drink while I am eating a "meal" and I try to wait at least 30 minutes after, but not always an hour.  If i am having some sort of light snack (which I also figured out is necessary to try to get enough protein in) then I don't worry about drinking at all.
I haven't had any problems with dumping and I also don't have much hunger.  As I progress to more  "real" foods, I will try to be compliant with the no drinking.... but to me lots of this is about finding the compromise that works for you.
