Protein Shake Question

I know this has been posted many times before, but I'm having trouble finding it.  A while back, someone posted the nutritional values we should look for in a protein shake - i.e. no more than x number of grams of sugar, carb, this much protein, etc.  Clear as mud?

I want to start having a protein shake for breakfast but don't know what to look for. Can anyone help?  Thanks in advance.

Hi Megan,

I'm doing that as well right now.   I've seen a lot of people on here talk about Premier Protein premade shakes from Costco.  I bought them and they aren't too bad tasting, and they have 30g of protein, 5 carbs and 1 gram of sugar.

 Hi Laura,

I too am thinking about going on a protein shake either for breakfast or for lunch or even for both - I might even try that "Ideal Protein" program. Have you had your surgery or are you doing this pre-surgery to get rid of some weight?

I haven't had my surgery yet, but would like to lose as much weight as possible before so that I will be at less risk.

Hi Tracey,

No I haven't had my surgery yet.  I tend to eat the wrong things for breakfast, so started switching for this to try the shakes out and to have something healthier.  It will be one meal that won't be strange when I'm on Optifast!  LOL

Best of luck,

Laura

Thanks for the info.  Unfortunately, we dont have a Costco in Thunder Bay (every time they try to move in, the Superstore cries the blues and Council caves to them!), so I'll probably go to GNC or one of the other health food stores.   Now I know what to look for on the label.  Isn't it funny how good we get at reading labels!!

I tend to write in my posts to look for at least 20 grams of protein, around 140 calories or so, no more than 2 carbs, and sugars under 2 g.  There can be variance but be careful as there are shakes that can be 200+ calories.

I agree with everything writetn in this thread, low carbs at least (20-35g_ of protein per scoop

and remember adding additional scopps to your shake is wasteful, becaus eyou body will NOT absorb anything more than around 30 grams at one time..

prior to surgery 323lbs....4 years post-op maintaining between 108- 114 lb loss.

life is AMAZING when you continue on the right path~!.  Use your surgeons gift to the fullest~!
