I think this was some serious dumping!
I've just returned from visiting my son in Petawawa, along with his wife, and our granddaughters, Elli who turned 2 when we were there, and our first hugs and kisses for 2-week old Ayla. After playing at the water park in Pembroke we ventured to a local dairy for ice cream. While I really, really wanted the burgundy cherry in a waffle cone, I chose the SF maple in a cup. The cup was pretty big, though, so I vowed to not eat it all. It was pretty darn good, and lo and behold, I ate the whole thing, but figured the treat would be ok b/c it was SF. WRONG!
Within 15 minutes I started to feel really unwell and when we got home I thought I might vomit, but didn't. About 15 minutes after that, so 30-40 minutes after I devoured the ice cream, I started having these serious stomach pains high up just under my sternum. Along with that, my insides were rolling around like a pot of boiling water. Soon after, the horrible gas started - I was pretty embarrassed b/c I was polluting the air in the house! That was followed by many visits to the bathroom - no details here, but it was pretty gross. All in all, this lasted about 2-3 hours, and continued very mildly for the rest of the evening.
I've never had this kind of a reaction to anything before, so I was really taken by surprise. I really thought I'd be okay b/c the ice cream was sugar-free, but I never thought about the possible maple syrup in it (don't know if it was for sure), or perhaps sugar alcohols got me?
Long story short - I don't ever want to feel that way again. My condolences to those of you who are regular dumpers!
On another note, I've been crying for 2 days now - don't know when I'll see my granddaughters again. Hopefully we'll be able to travel to them over Christmas. Will have to treasure pictures until we can get there again. Little tear. . .

Had RNY surgery July 22/11, St. Joe's Hamilton, with the awesome Dr. Scott Gmora. Had abdominoplasty August 2/13, Scarborough, with equally awesome Dr. Michael Kreidstein.

unfortunatley many SF items make up for the lack of taste with uber amounts of fat and/or sodium. My guess is the SF ice cream might have been higher in fat than the regular. I read the side of a box in Soberys one day, thinking hey, sugar free should be good. WRONG! I don't remember brand but the fat content was huge. (I just checked Chapman's website and their SF has a little over twice the fat content of their regular!) I have been away from SF stuff unless I can see the nutirent list per serving. Sorry you had a rough time! Regards, Ian
Hi Megan, im almost 2 years out and I too have not really had a true bout of dumping where I have thrown up but I have had the same symptoms as you. I have always been an ice cream freak so now when I have some, if im at home, I use just a little fruit nappe bowl and if we go out then I just get a kiddie cone (they are free at McDs...lol). Its just enough to satisfy my tastbuds and I don't get the dumping like symptoms.
This is often the case with ice cream for MANY.
Often it's the sugar alcohols. Sometimes the fat.
I remember person after person doing the NSA rolo here and dumping on that.
I always warn the newbies to be careful with ice cream - it's the one product that does it for many!

That's interesting to hear about the ice cream! A couple of weeks ago we took the kids out for a McDonald's cone. I figured the cold ice cream would be soothing, but it didn't sit well with me. Nothing severe, but I felt horrible afterwards and was bringing up foamy mouthfuls of it for a while afterwards. Everything else seems to go down ok but I can only eat very VERY tiny amounts.... Which is great!
