I was wondering if most of you that have irritable bowel had the Gastric Sleeve surgery or if your surgeon still recommended Roux en Y?  If the surgeon did recommend Roux en Y, what was his/her reason?  Also if you have IBS and had Roux en Y, did your IBS get worst?  I appreciate any information on this.

RNY on 07/10/12

I had IBS for 6 years and not one incident since my surgery 16 months ago. I had researched all of the surgeries and would have preferred the sleeve at that time but my surgeon decided that RNY would be best. He said that IBS affects the colon and not the small intestine so there was no medical reason for the sleeve to be performed. I did have open gall bladder surgery almost 20 yrs ago and he managed to do the RNY (though surgery took 5.5 hrs - far longer than most!).  I also had terrible heartburn for over 20 yrs and none since about 1 week post op.

VSG on 10/30/13

I had IBS for more than 15 years.  The surgeon chose to give me the VSG because I am on many medications and he was concerned about absorption.  I am 1 1/2 weeks out and have had loose bowel movements so far but i think it is too early to tell if the surgery has affected my IBS one way or the other.  i would tell your surgeon about your concerns and ask him which he thought would be the best surgery.  Best of luck :)

I was diagnosed with IBS when I was 20(29 now). The doctors made me aware that having RNY could cause the symptoms to become worse. I agreed to have the surgery any ways. I am nearly 4 months out and I have not had any troubles that I previously had. I feel like a million bucks. I have had short term constipation a few times but honestly I am pretty sure that is due to the lack of fibrous food in our diets early out and not IBS at all.

Hi Hibbyangel

Did your surgeon offer the gastric sleeve as a viable alternative to roux en y?

I honestly was not worried about it enough to explore other options. My IBS was usually stress triggered. I was able to manage the symptoms on a regular basis. Probiotics and lots of fibre powder helped a lot. Both of which i am still allowed to take now.
