Any one Recommend Dr. O'Malley from Rochester, NY??
A huge number of people from here in Ottawa go to Dr. O'Malley. Dr. O'Malley is an excellent surgeon with an amazing reputation and an amazing surgery record, he's even been on Oprah...BUT if you go to him be prepared to wait months, and travel back and forth to Rochester several times for consults, tests, psychologists appointments, nutritionist appointments etc. You also have to pay out of your pocket for the Nutritional and psych appointments.
He has a very strict policy on completing these requirements before surgery, and it usually takes a few months.
Cheers
Jen
I am almost at the surgury stage with DR. O'Malley I have heard alot of people say you have to jump through a lot of hoops for him but I am very pleased with his process. He does first do a seminar, then you will need to see a Nutrionist three time and a phyc once all you canschedule a nutrionist and the phyc on the same day. I also make you stay in rochester for a week after the surgery to make sure everything is okay. Considering he does this to make sure you will succeed in the process I do not mind it at all and it is very little money out of pocket. If you want to know anything else send me an email.
I had my surgery done by Dr' Omalley and I would not have had it done by anyone else. He is fantastic!!!!!!! He is definatly not a money grubber. I feel kind of insulted by that comment. Yes, I had to pay for my psych evaluation, but that was it. I think spending the money was well worth it.. I've lost 117 lbs so far and I've had no complications what so ever. I would recommend him to anyone.
I'm 14 months post op DS from Dr O'Malley and I would highly recommend him. The only thing I paid out of my pocket for was the Psych appointment. I had two nutrition appointments. It took me 4 months from consult to surgery date and that was over the Christmas holidays. If you want a quick surgery date then no he's not your guy but he's extremely thorough and knows his patients and wants them to succeed and I think that's so much more important than seeing a doctor 1 time before surgery. I did nothing extra to get the DS ... I didn't have to do more or send anything on my own. It was very simple.
That's just my opinion, other's have expressed theirs and you must do your research. I have a medical background so certain things were important to me to find in a surgeon.
He is a very good doctor but as others have mensioned if you want the quick surgury date hes not the one but he has a great reputation and if you dont mind the wait he is worth it from what i can tell. The cost i have incurred are a bit different. I had to pay 50 each for 2 nut appointments then 200 for the nut seminar and 200 for the phych eval. so about 500 american so far. plus hotel. so take that into consideration becouse it is a siugnificant amoutn of money.
I am Dr'O'Malley's biggest fan. I would not recommend anyone else. I also am somewhat offended by the comment that he or his office is money grubbing. At one time they only required one psych evaluation and one nutritionist evaluation but because "some" people don't change their eating habits they felt it was in the patient's best interests to do their due diligence to try to make sure everyone understands the lifestyles changes needed to be a success. If you call that money grubbing then I guess we certainly disagree on that point.
Bottom line - I feel in my heart it is best to have a Dr who is concerned about your long term success than rushing you though like a cattle call. That would make me wonder a bit about the money grubbing aspect of the system. Just my humble opinion.

I never said Dr. O'Malley was a money grubber. I said that a few patients have stated that they thought that having to pay for the nutrition and psych evals out of pocket was a money GRAB as they can be done here cheaper and without the travel.
I also stated that I had heard he was a very good surgeon. I presented both the bad and the good that I had been told as I have no personal opinion about Dr. O'Malley and was only stating what I had heard from others about his procedures.
