Nicki, I don't have any great solutions (or recipes!) for you, but I have started to read The Beck Diet Solution....
Interesting that the chapter I am on next talks about learning to recognize and deal with hunger vs. cravings vs. the desire to eat. Most of my "cravings" thus far have really just been the desire to eat - old behavior patterns rearing their head.

I had same desire. In fact, one of my first 'real food meals was Indian Chicken. I asked for mild spice, scraped off excess sauce, nixed any rice or breads.....and enjoyed a suitable portion of chicken curry.
My surgeon said it was an ok food to have on occasion as long as I didn't eat alot of the sauce -- they contain fats/oils etc. and possible carbs. But, once in while, ok to have. You can also experiment with spices to arrive at similar flavors in a wls friendly recipe.
I too am reading the Beck Diet Solution... it is helping me differentiate cravings/head hunger and the real thing. And. more often than not, I am expereincing head hunger.
Good luck......

Nicki,
Sometimes, food cravings can be an indicator of our body's need for a particular substance that we're "low" on (i.e., craving a steak when we're low on iron). Other times, it's an addiction rearing its ugly head. Distinguishing between them can be tough.
Beck can help. Anatomy of a Food Addiction by Anne Katherine can help (GREAT book). Ultimately, what both of them do is help you work through the thought process and associations behind the particular food to try and figure out whether it's an addiction/associate issue or a real body need.
As to indian food, japanese food, any other food - it's just fine in moderation. You have to figure out which foods in that tradition are "safe" for you (safe in terms of weight loss AND safe in terms of not triggering a binge) and then guide yourself to healthy portions of them.
I've found that I have times when I'm craving sashimi for a period of a couple of weeks, then move on to something else (mexican? thai?) for a while. Seems normal and as long as I remain in control and am monitoring it, doesn't seem to do any damage.
As to indian, if you like tandoori, you can buy pre-mixed tandoori spice at the grocery store (either wet or dry - i like the wet, personally). Mix it with plain greek yogurt to your desired spiciness, then coat chicken breast in it and marinate for a least 4 hours. Take it out and grill it or broil it with the tandoori marinade on it and some red onions. REALLY good, no added fats or sugars - just added protein.
Hope this helps!
