Ok so this is my favorite site to ask questions and I know I will get nothing but the best answers from everyone.  I don't really know how to read labels, I never did understand this procedure.  What are good and what are bad things that I should look for in a product?  Like how much is too much of sugar, carbs, fat, etc.  I never know what is too much or what is good...sorry for being so dumb about this but I need and want to learn this so I choose the right product.  Thanks so much.  I don't know what I would do without this board, everyone is so helpful with everything.

Ok....the more protein the better. I generally shoot for something with 10gm of protein per serving or more...and by per serving I mean a serving for us (1/2 cup more or less) depending on how far out from surgery you are.  (I forget how far along you are)

Sugars:  I was taught less than 2gm of sugar per serving IF FROM ADDED SUGAR.  How do you know if it's added or natural?  You then need to look at the ingredient list (I generally follow a 5gm rule now, not 2gm)  If in the FIRST FIVE INGREDIENTS you find anything such as:  Sugar, honey, molasses, corn syrup etc then it is ADDED.  If these ingredients (or similar ones) are not in the first five, then it should be "legal"  For instance...dannon lite and fit has more than 2gm per serving, but there is no sugar (made with splenda)  The 5gm comes from the milk.  Fruit etc has "natural" sugars that are allowed.

Fat:  My nut reccommends no more than 10gm of fat per meal, and no more than 40gm of fat per day for my needs.  Everyone's different on their nutritional guidelines, but this is a basic "line in the sand" if you will

Protein:  My protein goals for the first year after surgery (while I was still losing) was 70gm/day  For maintence, I was dropped down to 50gm/day although I have recently bumped it up as I'm trying to lose some of the weight I regained by slacking off.

Carbs:  I never really got a number on this...and I don't pay much attention to it as long as it is "healthy" carbs.  Again, things like fruit, veggies, milk have carbs in them.  And I try to get my carbs from these sources and NOT refined things such as pasta, potatoes, bread, etc.  Those who have pressed their nuts for carb limits say that the carb limits are supposed to be around the same as the fat for the day.  That would be around 40gm of carbs in a day.  Mine are generally higher than that, though, but again, I try to keep it from unrefined sources

I'm going with Pam on this.  My short version is almost like her details.

Protein ... shoot for 10 per 1/2 cup  (my goal a day is 80 grams)
No more than 10 grms of fat per meal
No more than 3 grms of Added sugar ( I don't care the sugar count if it comes from natural source.. IE... fruits and dairy)
I also don't count carbs but since I really try to get all my protein in... I save room for that instead.

Glad you could understand it and have the info now.....it can be a little confusing at first...but once you get used to it, you know exactly what to look for and can read a label in no time flat!

If you are carb sensitive, then limit your carbs to the same as your fat BUT they should be natural carbs such as vegetable.

If you are not carb sensitive then limit the carbs to 30% of your intake.  Judging my your surgery date, I'd say keep it under 65 grams daily.
