OT - What am I doing wrong?
Two of my 3 professors this marking period have the same cell theory. They would rather us call, ask, and get help rather than be frustrated or not to the work all together due to not understanding something.
I have texted or called both of those teachers, taking advantage of thier willingness to offer help. They wouldn't offer if they didn't care. And I am sooooo thankful.
Now I know I am coming from a college standpoint, but having experienced the helpfulness it brings me, I would not object to my sons (who don't have cells yet) to have that same open line of communication with thier teachers in public school.
There is always a line. Whether it be cells, emails, social networks, or face to face. So pin pointing cells to be the "problem" is ridiculous. If a teacher IS going to be inappropriate, it can happen various ways, not just through a text, so it's unfair to assume that if a teacher texts, it's wrong.
I admire you Steffi, I have told you before and will tell you again, if I had a teacher like you in math, I probably wouldn't struggle so much now. You care about teaching, you help your students, you make your class a learning atmosphere that kids enjoy and do not dread going to. (aka. ME + ALGEBRA CLASS)

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!
I think it is much different on the collegiate level, however, my son did have the numbers of several of his teachers and I was able to contact them as well. Any maybe I am different because of the type of educator I try to be. I do want my kids to have a comfort level with math so that they do NOT have fears and anxieties that many adults have as they get older. And I do think that the majority of the time my students do enjoy coming into my classroom - even if it is to see me make a fool out of myself! :)
Heck yes you're crazy. Any other questions?
Seriously though, the problem is other people are crazy too, so the principal is probably just covering his ass, as you should cover your own ass. I suppose that you being a great teacher and making yourself available to your students could total be taken the wrong way and turned into a problem.
The bigger concern is that every 8th grader in Philly has your number, just in case they have a problem. Me? I got nothing. What if I have a problem? Hmpf...
