Hi Everyone,

I haven't been on this site in over a year. I have found out that can be very dangerous as now I am having lots of health issues and in one of my tests that I took today I find out that my Iron saturation is 6%,  The doctor wants to put me on iron supplement 325mg. 3x's a day, for the next two months. Who else has this problem and do you have any ideas oh what to do.

Thanks!!

Hi Sheryl,
My iron has recently showed as low although not as low as yours.  I have had an ongoing problem with my Iron most of my life.  It will go low, I go on Iron suppliments it improves, then goes low again.  My PCP was waiting for this to happen, just didn't expect it to happen so quickly for me.  I had my surgery 7 months ago.
I've been put on Ferrous Gluconate 324 mg once a day with Citamin C 500 mg.
In the past prior to WLS I have been on Iron 2-3 times a day depending on how depleted I was.

Thanks for the info. I figured I better call my surgeon and ask him what I should do for the iron since we don't absorb things like regular people. I didn't know about the vitamin C so thanks for the help. This must have been bad. I got a call at work from the Dr.'s office about 5 hours after they took the blood. I figured that wasn't a good thing.  Thanks again!

Your welcome.  The iron I am on was perscribed by my surgeon.

Hi neighbor, I live in Abbottstown too!

Anyway, my iron sat is always less than 9. When it gets to 4, I get iron transfusions. Usually about 2 times per year, sometimes longer.

It can be normal since we do not absorb iron as easily. Make sure they don't give you Iron Sulfate. It won't work. I don't know if it's Dr. Garber prescribing it or your PCP but make sure they research WLS and Iron Absorption so they do what is best fit for you.

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

I have a call into Dr. Garber. I didn't pick up my RX from the pharmacy yet. I want to see what he says first.  I was reading about the transfusions.  Are they painful?  I have a feeling they may go that route once I hear from Dr. Garber. I have a feeling he is going to ask for a complete work up. What ever...I have everyone else poking at me he might as well too.

Since you live in Abbottstown maybe we can get together.  I am always looking for a friend. :)

Do me a favor and keep in touch.

Thanks, Sheryl

I'm glad Ida and Jo were able to answer the iron question...I didn't know to much about iron saturation....

Anyway - you mentioned "lots of health issues" what are they if you don't mind?  Wondering if we can help you out in any other way....

I don't mind sharing however no one quite knows what's wrong with me.  At first the doctors in the ER thought I had a mini stroke. They did a CT and found something in the scan so they said it was either that or a possible TIA.  I have left side numbness on my face and arm. I have been suffering with terrible headaches since February every day, all left sided, almost like a migraine but not.

They have done the CT of my brain, a MRI with and without contrast of my brain, the neurologist didn't believe it was a stroke from those results. He told me that it's not Bells palsy. I have been tested for Lyme's disease and that was negative. They sent me to a vascular surgeon and he sent me for a carotid Doppler to see if that's causing the headaches.

During all this blood work and other testing they told me I was a little anemic.  My PCP was looking over all the tests and suggested I get the iron saturation test along with normal liver, thyroid, metabolic panel stuff.  He called me the same day concerning the iron, it was a Stat level and the lab called him.  I haven't gone to pick up the iron yet since I know I should check with my surgeon first before I get them and then find out I can't use them.

I called Dr. Garber, my gastric bypass surgeon, to find out what to do.  I haven't heard back from them yet.  He is probably going to be mad,.... I haven't seen him for my 3 year check up. I have a $2000 deductible and everything applies, and honestly I couldn't afford the blood work.  Funny.... I met my deductible by the end of March.  So if he wants any more blood work it won't cost me anything now.

Thanks for listening. I kind of feel helpless a bit. I have been to 5 doctors and no one can figure out what's wrong. Next stop is the rhuematologist next Thursday and back to the vascular surgeon on Friday. Yippee...
