Obstructed bowels
I am just curious if any one has had obstructed bowels since gastric by-pass surgery?
I am 1 year almost 7 months out. May 3 I started having pain in the abdomen. After a visit to the ER , at which I was admitted they said I had a twisted, obstructed bowel. Had surgery the next day. Lucky for me my gastric bypass Dr did the surgery, The ER Doctor was great. I am very lucky that it was caught right away. When he knew I had gastric surgery he ordered a CAT Scan immediately.
Is this common? He said I had alot of scar tissue from previous surgeries which turned and twisted the bowel.
Thanks for any answers.

Yes, a few of us have had obstructions. Myself included.
Obstructions are most generally caused by adhesions, which is the scar tissue, from surgeries. Considering you have had multiple abdominal surgeries, you are higher at risk for such things. The more surgeries you have, the more scar tissue can build up.
I was 7 mos out from RNY when I had mine. Mine resolved on it's own and thankfully I did not need surgery. That doesn't always happen. I had actually gone to the ER thinking it was my gallbladder...boy was I surprised.
Norm had a twisting bowel...only his would twist and then untwist so it took a few "attacks" for them to actually catch it on ct scan.
Glad it got fixed. Hope you are feeling better.

Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.

Hi JoAnn,
Yes it certainly can happen and I'm still around to talk about it. It doesn't happen to many of us but it can happen. I had my experience at 2 1/2 years out after a internal hernia repair. The emergency surgery for the obstruction was performed 6 days after the hernia surgery. It was not a warm and fuzzy experience. I was at Barix in Langhorne for a few weeks and it was without question my most difficult time, physically and emotionally. I got through it all with a staff that kept me here along with family and the best support network anyone can imagine. There were a few support group meetings in my room during my stay as well as many visits from so many Barix and OH forever friends. It's a time I will never forget and I will always be thankful.
It will be 3 years this July/August and I am as strong as ever, giving back all that I can.
My experience is not a common one but I came out of it with a few lessons.
We are a fragile group and when something is not right with us, don't hesitate to call a doctor or visit the ER. It may be nothing or it may be something. I would rather you be diligent and address the condition.
We should never hestiate to lean on our family, friends and support buddies to help us through difficult times. Support is a real gift and it can keep on giving.
Good Luck in your journey,
stay true to yourself,
take care of yourself,
be selfish with yourself,
give and receive support,
always.

I had an internal hernia and my intestines got twisted around it somehow and my Gastric bypass Dr. was able to fix it laprascopically.
when I git that pain it was like contractions avery 10 minutes and the severe pain lasted about 30 seconds or so, I called my friend Dennnis & he told me to go to the hospital cause he had something similar if not the same thing and I called Dr. P. and she sent me to the ER to get a CT scan and they did emergency surgery at Barix.
my intestines swish around in my abdomen now since there is more room to move and that is how it happened. and I m fine now

Thanks everyone for your replies. I was just curious if this is common and can re-occur.
I sure dont want to go through this again. It wasnt a pleasant experience. I was tol I have alot of scar tissue and that can also cause the twisting and obstruction. All is well now. Feeling better every day. Just dont want any more surprises like this. Once again, thank you all for your posts. It means alot to have someone to talk to whos been there.
