When I first seen Dr Polh he told me that I would need to loose 10 lbs to see if I was committed to loose weight and 10 lbs right before surgery to give the liver better exposure while doing the surgery. Did they give you a time frame for the weight loss ? Good Luck  Marc

hello did your doctor explain the reasoning behind this weight loss? There are reasons aside from being sure that you are committed to changing your lifestyle and behavior (because making this change is the ONLY thing that will keep the weight OFF - the surgery helps you lose it, gives you that running start - but only making good choices will keep it off). The main reason is your liver. Your liver works to rid your body of toxins. Fat, essentially, is a toxin. When you ingest real fatty foods - your liver has to work twice as hard and can blow up in size. When lying down, your liver is located on top of your stomach - so if you think about surgery is performed, your surgeon needs to work around your liver. If you want laproscopic surgery (which we all do - trust me), you will want your liver to be as small as humanly possible so as to avoid any possible nicks by the surgical instruments. It allows your doctor to see what he is doing to your stomach more clearly. Not a bad thing, right?! The most important thing, i think, that you can do in these months before surgery is stick to a very low fat, lean meat diet. Not only will this help your liver - but it will help you gear up for the major change you are about to embark on.  plus - losing 20 pounds never hurt anyone's self esteem, right? It does a body good! Kristen*

I think that most Doctors what you to loose weight.  To show committment and shrink the liver.   My doctor requires a two week liquid diet just before surgery. Hope you do well. ....dave
