Hello,

I saw Dr. Roye today, and I am borderline dehydrated. Does anyone have any advise on how to get all of the fluids in? I am struggling here.

Thanks,

Aimee

I know what its like.  Dr. Roye ended up getting me an IV nurse at my home to give me fluids or I would have ended up in the hospital.  Sip whenever you can.  It will add up.  Carry a water bottle around with you.  I was hooked up to an IV for two days at home at 4 hours at a time, its not fun.  Sip, Sip, Sip.

I start sipping as soon as I get up and just keep refilling my water bottle throughout the day with water or SF tea and lemonade.  I usually get 16.9 oz of fluid in before I even eat breakfast.  I'm finding it harder this week eating mushies and getting all my fluid in.  Everything has to be timed.  Try writing down your meal and fluid plan for the day with the times that you will eat or drink. Otherwise, how are you doing?

Hello all!!!

Thanks for all of your wonderful advice. I will try to write down my intake. The problem that I am running into is that I am so exhausted that I sleep a lot. Then, I am behind in sipping. Add to that, the timing that Jenny spoke of....I mean...UGH!!!!!!!!

Dr. Roye's nurse said that I am also behind because I was intubated for 4 days, while a "normal" post op would have started liquids on the same day as the surgery. I have to train my mind.

Thanks!!!

You might be less tired if you get in more fluids also.    Always have a drink in your hand - that is my best advice.

Try to eat lots of SF popsicles and maybe jello.  Also, even though it is hot, try to increase the broth.  Jus****ch the sodium intake.  Ice chips are good too. Good Luck! Jen

Hi again Aim!

I agree with everyone above. Jen has a great suggestion with the ice chips too.

If I don't consciously make myself sip, every time I look at the bottle or my glass, I forget too. I do the ice, SF popsicles, broth and Crystal Light all day long and I bring an insulated bag with me with at least two 24 ounce bottles of water where ever I go. I have my whole family reminding me to sip.

Sometimes with ice in my drinks, sometimes not. And I still do the Proti shakes

Because of this, I'm able to get in an average of 75 ounces a day.

Just keep sipping, just keep sipping, just keep sipping, sipping, sipping (Dory's swimming saying on Finding Nemo).

Good luck!

Jule

HI Aimee.. it is so hard to get those fluids in. I ate and drank pretty much on a time table. Seemed to help me out. I had popcicles, flavored water and all sorts of SF stuff around so I would be reminded. I got so bored with water, still do actually. Wish you well.. hope it works out well for you.
