It's happened to me again...
I went to the gym tonight and did my usual 45 min. workout. Nothing out of the ordinary, just walking around the track for about 35 min. and eliptical for 10 min. I stopped at wal mart on the way home for maybe 3 or 4 things. By the time I got to the checkout, I was shaking so badly that I couldn't write out my check. I bought a protein bar on the spot, ate it in the car on the way home, and it took about an hour to feel like myself again.
I really don't understand this. I ate about 1 1/2 hours before going to the gym, so I wasn't starving. It was a pretty good workout, but not punishing to the point of exhaustion. My fluid was a little on the low side for the day, maybe 30 oz or so up to that point. I had my calcium, folic acid, and iron for the day.
My hubby suggested drinking something to replace electrolytes, like gatorade, but I don't think they make a sugar-free version.
I guess I should call someone. I'm not sure if I should call my surgeon or regular family doctor. On the bright side, I was asked out by a young hottie at the gym, and I had to tell him I was married. (That has NEVER happened to me before!)
Any ideas?
YEAH ON THE HOTTIE ASKING YOU OUT!!!
That is so cool!!!!!! WOOHOO!
As for the shakiness you could be having hypoglycemic episodes. How long do you go between meals throughout the day. Many postops get this! I haven't but I eat 5-6 mini meals a day and I think that is why I haven't. I knew this could be a problem after surgery with all the research I did and chose to do minimeals instead of 3 meals. Do you have a blood sugar machine? if not I would suggest getting one, I am pretty sure its low blood sugar hun. (taking my nurses' cap back off)

I try to pop something in my mouth every 3 hours, to keep the metabolism running high. All in all, I eat maybe 3 mini meals, alternated with 3 snacks (usually protein bars).
During my preop testing, it was discovered that I was a diabetic, but I had the surgery before treatment could begin for it. They did regular accu-checks on me in the hospital post op and they were all normal.
My lips get numb along with the jitters. Is this a sign of a hypoglycemic episode too?
If that is the case, what can be done about it?
Yes, sounds like low blood sugar, i would bet money on it. What can u do to prevent it.. well most say to eat whole grains or good carbs with protein at each meal.. are you eating before your workout? If not, do a protein bar, I do one and it helps a lot. Good luck and please let your surgeon know about this.. it could be reactive hypoglycemia (meaning drops after something u eat) or b/c you are burning of glucose at the gym and didn't have enough on board before your workout. Remember you need a good carb/protein source before a work out! You may also need one after.. i know it sounds like you are defeating the purpose of a work out but its very true. Good luck.

I am not sure why it is happening, or what it could be. I am guessing lack of fluids especially since you worked out. Try drinking Propel, it is made by Gatorade but it has less sugar. My surgeon allows this, it was actually part of my liquids only the 2nd day after surgery. I drink this a lot, I even bought the to go packs and keep a couple in my bag when I am on the go. Check with your surgeon first to make sure this would be ok to drink, because I know each surgeon allows and disallows certain things.

Carbs, carbs, carbs, like Melissa said. I had the same issue, the nutritionist told me to make sure I eat 50+ grams of carbs a day-- for me it's whole grains, fruit and vegetables. As a potential diabetic it might be especially wise to find those with a low glycemic index so they will stay with you a little longer as well. What you DON'T want is the ones like mashed potatoes, which metabolize very quickly as sugar.
Do a Google search on low glycemic index foods-- see which ones you like! ;)
Propel helps-- has carbs too!

It sounds like I do when my blood sugar goes too low. I normally have a headache afterwards too. As far as gatorade I'm not sure but Crystal light makes a hydration drink. I get it when I dont' think I have gotten enough fluids in. I get the pink lemonade and it taste good.
I live for the day a young hottie asks me out!!!!LOL
