Meat Q for Post Ops
Hi everyone,
I don't have guidance from my surgery team on which meats I should and shouldn't focus on eating... so I hope you post ops can help!
I'm about 7 weeks out from RNY and have been doing well with foods. I have found that I don't tolerate chicken very well, but beef, pork, seafood are fair game. I tried sausage tonight and I was great, and I got to wondering if fatty meats like pork will slow my weight loss.
I'm fairly sure that I have insulin resistance as a result of my PCOS, so carbs are really my main concern. But how have you all fared with fatty meats like pepperettes, jerky, and sausage? Thanks!

I have had no trouble with fatty meats -- although I am not a big fan of pork, so I usually do turkey sausage which has far fewer calories. I do tend to avoid processed meats -- but I have eaten pepperoni and salami on occasion. My go-tos for more rapid loss are shrimp, scallops, tuna, and white fish. I find I get the biggest bang for my protein buck with them -- they are naturally low in calories, high in protein and full of good fats. Next is beef -- I buy great cuts since I eat so little -- or cheap cuts (like a london broil) and use good marinades. Chicken took a bit longer to tolerate well, but I definitely do now. Last on my list are processed meats (bacon, sausage, etc) and pork. Be careful of jerky -- a lot of them have added sugars.
Hope this helped!

This is my opinion: I wish I ate more fat in first year post op. That would help my GB and liver... But I did mostly lean meats...and lean protein shakes, fat free yogurt...etc.. At the end - my GB was full of sludge and I had to have it removed...
Limit carbs, and as long as fatty food don't give you nausea... Go for it... I wish I did...
Now I maintain or lose weight limiting carbs, but not worrying about fat too much...

I found beef much easier in the beginning than chicken. Chicken thighs are a little easier to eat. I should eat more seafood because I do love it. I like the Shady Brook farms Hot Turkey sausage. Not really hot but has better flavor than the sweet.

I can still eat less chicken than anything else. Fat never bothered me, but overall I didn't have processed meat like sausage that often. I tried cooking turkey bacon once, but the smell was so horrible that I threw it out before it was even done cooking.
Early on I had leaner cuts like tenderloin, but more because of the tenderness than the lack of fat. Deli meats were the first things I ate. They are moist and easiest to chew when sliced thin. I had a lot of deli ham.
I'm in line to become the national spokesperson for ribeye next year. Fat is delicious.
