Follow up to my post "I think it might finally be time to do this"

First, I want to thank everyone again who took the time to respond to my previous post. Your feedback and words of encouragement have been so helpful to me.

I had my first meeting with the surgeon today and it went well. I went in expecting him to recommend the RNY but he is recommending VSG specifically because of the possibility of future steroids. I have MS and steroids are given for relapses and also with certain MS medications. I guess steroids any time after RNY can put the anastomosis site at risk, enough of a risk to lean toward VSG. So that is what we landed on.

He said I was a good candidate though overall and we have started the ball rolling. I scheduled the dietitian visit. I need to call to schedule the psych visit. He wants me to get an upper GI done. Then of course ekg, bloodwork, etc. My insurance doesn't require a certain number of months or multiple dietitian visits. We are looking at 3-4 months, I am thinking mid to end of April if all the requirements fall into place in that time frame.

I also finally told my husband that I have been thinking about surgery. It's not that I didn't think he would be supportive I just needed to be ready to talk about something so drastic. We talked for a while and he is incredibly supportive. He said he will support me in every way possible. He is also somewhat overweight and has type 2 diabetes so the dietary changes I will have to make are what he wants to make as well.

It is starting to feel real all of a sudden. But I know it is time for this. And I feel in my heart it is the right thing to do. I am nervous and excited. I want to spend these months learning and getting mentally prepared.

I guess I'll be checking in with the VSG group but I will probably lurk here as well. Appreciate all the support

Congratulations on moving forward. I remember that surreal feeling pre-surgery- Am I really doing this?

I do understand the quandary with steroids. I have asthma and have only needed to take them once since RNY surgery. There have been a few times though that the Doc wanted me to take, but I held off and until the antibiotics kicked in. Always a hard decision.

I also did not have a six month waiting period. It took about 3 ½ months from the time I saw the surgeon until I had surgery. For me that was good, I was secretly terrified and it kept the momentum going. There was a great fear of the unknown on the other side. No regrets.

Good Luck!

As long as you have never suffered from GERD, VSG is a good choice.

This forum is a little livelier than the VSG group, especially the menu thread, so feel free to join in here. Noone is going to banish you lol; we have quite a few interlopers and I participate over there regularly too. Just make sure you put your surgery type and date on your profile, so people can answer any of your questions relevantly!

I have VSG and am very happy with it. I participate in both the VSG and RNY menu threads, though haven't been able to post quite as often lately due to other life stuff. I like my friends in both places (and yes, RNY tends to be more active)!

I was about 3.5 months from first appointment to surgery as well.

Best of luck!
