I have IHC insurance and just received my denial letter this week. Gastric bypass is completely excluded. I have tried to appeal to them over the past three years. I even talked to a lawyer who said he doesn't know of a lawyer who has won a case against IHC or is even willing to try because it seems to be impossible. I wish I had better news for you. I myself am leaving my employment (after seven years0 at IHC for another company that has insurance that will cover this. Good luck. Keep trying -- it will be worth it!

Hi Kristen, I too have Altius they have an exclusionary policy. So I did not pursue having them pay for my surgery. I had been told one too many times w/ other companies. The Altius rep. told me that he never knew of any RNY surgeries being paid for . I just forked over the money and paid for it myself. Good Luck. Kristen

Valerie, Keep up the good work. The more exercise you get before the surgery, the easier it will be on you. You will be on the losing side in no time at all. I think alot of people from Utah post on the BSCI website and also the Rocky Mountain website. You can go to either site and sign up as a guest. the website is: BARIATRICSUPPORTCENTER.COM and UTAHBARIATRICS.COM Keep me posted on your surgery date and be sure to let me know if you want vistors during your hospital stay. Hello Lisette. I will be having open RNY in about a month. I am going through the wish center with Dr. Hanafy and i'm very excited. I'm curently reading everything i can and try new things for exercise. Today i went to water aerobics for the first time and loved it. I was so scared and was afraid of what others would think. however i went and enjoyed it and everyone was very nice. I can't wait to lose enough weight that i won't feel so uncomfortable. I have been walking but i keep getting blisters on my feet so i knew i had to give up my fears and just go swimming. Thanks for responding to my post. I think that it's really sad that more of us from Utah don't post here. We could all use the support of each other. I appreciate your thought and ideas. I will keep you posted on what i do. Valerie

Hi Valerie, Welcome aboard and congratulations on your decision to have the surgery. I had open RYN on 11/5/02 at St. Marks Hospital with Dr. Sherman Smith. I started out at 304 lbs and have lost 158 lbs. I reached goal at 8 months out. The surgery was the best thing that I have ever done. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Where are you having the surgery at and which doctor. The key to success is following the plan and make sure you utilize the support groups. They are essential to being successful. I am a member of BSCI in Salt Lake. They have a wonderful support group. Check out their site at: bariatricsupportcenter.com If you would like to have volunteers from the group come and visit you in the hospital, let me know and I will arrange that. It is always nice to have someone come in to cheer you up and support you. Keep us updated and good luck. Lisette

I had surgery at St. Marks and was very happy with the hospital and the nurses. Yes the rooms are small but your there to recover so as long as the care is good, that's what really counts. I have dealt with St. Marks on numerous occasions and have never had any bad experiences with them. Good Luck, Lisette

Topic: insurance information??
I recently got a job that has altius insurance and have read that people have been approved for surgery. So I guess my question is to anyone who has had altius approve this surgery... What, if any problems did you experience getting altius to approve the surgery and what's the process like? Thanks for any information you can provide, Kristen

I've just read some reviews about this hospital, which of course I'm having my surgery at. I've read about the small rooms and bad nursing staff. Does anyone have any experiences they would like to share or tips? I would change to cottonwood but my Doc only goes to this hospital I think and plus I've already made all the appointments. If you want you can E-mail me at [email protected]. Thanks

IHC has a clause in their insurance saying that they will not pay for weight loss. so they won't even look at your history or anything. Sorry but good luck.

Hi, I am a Utah resident. I had Value Care (U of U employee) as my insurance for a few years. I was denied from Value Care. Since then I have changed jobs (one month ago). I now work for IHC and have been told they will deny you although I have not asked Has anyone applied through IHC and got approved or do you have any tips to apply?
