Topic: I have a surgery date!
Yahoo! I have a surgery date set for August 11, 2003. I'm really excited and a little nervous that it is actually here! I'm excited because I'm feeling rather fat today and can't wait to get the weight off! I look at some of my clothes and think, "This won't fit me soon!" I'd love to hear from other people where they are on their path...

Topic: I went to a Pre-Op Class!!
I went to Dr. Alldredge's Pre-Op Class for the Lap Band. It was really nice meeting other people that will be having the same procedure. One was scheduled for the next day and we were all very excited for him. Two others had their surgery dates! Vivienne was awesome! She is an RN and was Dr. A's first lap band patient. She was very nice and answered all our questions. Kristen was also there to talk to us about exercise. It was really fun and I am looking forward to my surgery date and eventually joining the support group!

Topic: RE: What employers offer wls friendly insurance to part timers?
My hubby works for DMBA. They currently pay for the bypass and are working on the lap band. Starting in January, I know the percentage of coverage changes. I know IHC does not cover WLS. I know some people that are going with United Health Care and are waiting for approval. Good Luck! Tasha

Where do all you lucky approved ones work that offers insurance to cover this procedure? I am self employed and so able to take on a part time job for the insurance. Or does anyone know of an insurance for the self employed that will cover it? Thanks ahead of time, Leslie

Topic: RE: Is losing weight pre-op a must for RMPA clients
Hi Roxanne, I had surgery June 19th Didn't have to lose before surgery. I had actually gained before surgery with those last suppers even though I was trying to be careful. Try not to gain before I am kicking my self because I would now be 20 lbs lighter. It also would have been 20 lbs I didn't have to lose. Doing great after surgery and loved Dr Halversen.

Hi Roxanne! I have some friends who have had surgery with RMPA and they did not have to lose weight before surgery. I have also seen the other posts here and on other websites where some surgoens require it. Some of the situations are so the surgoen can do the lap and others the surgeons want to test the compliance and willingness of the patient. It can also make your liver less fatty and because of this its easier to do the procedure, I think its because they are less likely to accidently cut the liver. That's what I've heard on the subject.

To anyone who is post op and went through Rocky Mountain Physicians Assoc., here in Salt Lake, do they make you do a special diet before surgery or lose weight? I keep hearing people on the regular message board saying that their doctor made them lose weight before surgery. The lady posted tonight that and she only had a BMI of 42.

Roxanne, One bit of advice is keep calling. Ask lots of questions. You can usually get into St. Marks easier than Cottonwood because they are more expensive. Sit on the insurance company and the Dr. Office. Go in person if you can to talk to the scheduling person at Rock Mtn. She will help you try to get an schedule that works for you. I had Simper and went to Cottonwood but I had to pay for it myself so I got in sooner. Don't give up. Best Wishes, Rita Merlo

Donna, Congatulations. By now your surgery is over and you are into your recovery period. Hang in there girl, it will get better. Be sure to go to all of the support meetings and classes. We have a world class support group and it helps so much. Best of Luck, Rita Merlo

Topic: RE: Does anyone know why Dr Halverson doesn't do the lap and only open?
Halverson is the reason I went with the OPEN, my insurance covered both.. However, I still went with the OPEN and I'm glad I had Halverson... I am 15 days post op, insision is almost healed and I'm walking a mile an a half each day... GO WITH HALVERSON Chuck
