Topic: Support Groups
I had my RNY done in August and unfortunately my surgeon does not offer a support group. Is there any support groups in the Salt Lake City area that would allow someone to attend that did not have surgery done with their surgeon? Just hoping I guess. Terri

Hi, I thought I posted earlier today but it didn't turn up so I'm trying again. I live near Grand Junction, Colorado which puts me pretty close to the same distance either direction (the Front Range or Salt Lake) to find a bariatric surgeon. I know that others have traveled long distances for their surgeries and would like to know how living far from the dr. impacted the process. After ten years of contemplating WLS and waiting for the right insurance at the right time I've decided to just forget the insurance and put the whole shebang on plastic. Thanks for any info. --Didi

Topic: Need Info
Hello Everyone from SD-- my sister is looking into gastric bypass-- she is scheduled for her 1st dr appt with Bradley Thaemert on Nov 5th. What's the scoop? Has any one used him that reads the postings? How many surgeries had he done? # of complications? any gastric leaks? how many deaths? bedside manners? I had my lap RNY on 12-10-03 and feel wonderful, but I had mine in Little Rock AR with Dr Mark Gibbs. My surgeon, as I am sure most people feel, is awesome. His creditials are great-He teaches new Dr's along with the fact that he learned from Dr Ozmond who perfected the Roux N Y the way it is done today- I want to make sure that my sister is going to a experienced Dr of gastric bypasses. We had some local dr's here that got on the band wagon and had horrible complications with their patients including multiple deaths. I am down 143 lbs now and am at goal weight. I would love for my sister to feel the same freedoms that I now have-- freedom from feeling like crap all of the time & having no energy. My sister also have extreme joint pain and fibromyaga? Not sure of spelling. Anyway- any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks & Have a great day! Tanya

Thanks for the information. I have looked at Dr. Belnap's website and I plan on calling his office for more info. Sounds like you are doing well, I hope I can be as successful. I'll let you know what I decide and when my surgery gets scheduled. Thanks again for the info. Kimberly

Hi Kimberly, I had my surgery on August 16th by Dr. LeGrand Belnap. I was sent to him to have my gallbladder removed and he talked me into having the RNY done. I am so thrilled. I'm already down 42 lbs. He is actually a big time transplant doctor and got into doing the WLS because in order to do some transplants you can not be over 50 lbs overweight. He had to get his patients weight down quickly so that he could save their lives with the transplants. He is somewhat eccentric and I have no idea when he sleeps. However, he is the doctor they call when other surgeons mess up WLS. I would say he is probably the most skilled in this surgery. Because he is such a busy doctor, he doesn't have the support groups and stuff that some other WLS doctors do. When you have an appointment with him it's best to bring a drink and a book because you will probably have to wait on him. He does his surgery at St. Marks or if you need an IHC hospital at LDS. I had mine done at LDS and they were wonderful -- private room and all. Good luck to you. Keep me posted. We are exactly the same age and almost the same stats. I'm 5'6 and weighed 287 prior to WLS.
