??question??
First of all, I know that most of you are not health care providers, but I have a question for you anyway. Sometimes, not at all often, but still it happens to me from time to time. Like today, I was upstairs doing some mild spring cleaning in my boys' rooms. I started feeling shaky and weak. My eyes felt like they were blacking out and I felt the urge to get something to drink and eat. I was not working hard at all, just stripping beds, dusting and throwing away some accumulated junk. I came down stairs and got a drink of water, a piece of cheese and a bite or two of a protein bar, but I still feel weak. I decided to take a break...so here I am. I have felt this way before, usually after a work out at the gym. I ate breakfast this morning and was not hungry. Could this be low blood sugar attacks? Like I said, this does not happen often, but when it does, I feel really weird. I will mention this to my doctor next month when I go, but I dont feel the need to make a special appointment to address it. I just wanted to know if any of you have felt this way, and what do you think it may be? If it is low blood sugar, what should I do to regulate it at the moment.
Have a wonderful Friday. I am going back up to finish cleaning up and then hopefully laying down to get a much needed nap before I go to work for the 3 day weekend graveyard shift starting tonight!!!
Tootles!

Seek ye first the kingdom of God
Hey Cath. I am not a doctor and I do not play one on tv. I am, however, a insulin dependent diabetic and some of what you describe could be low blood sugar or hypoglycemia. Those are some of what I feel like if my sugar drops too low. May I suggest going to a drug store and picking up a blood sugar kit. One touch has their mini kit for about $20 bucks and it is small enougn to stick in your purse. My endocrinologist likes blood sugars to be between 70-120 approximately so getting the kit, checking it when you feel that way may help you see if it is low sugar. When my sugar is low, I have been directed to drink 8oz of orange juice. For every 8oz of sugar it will increase the blood sugar approximately 50 points. I have also been told that protein is good to consume to stablize and regulate the blood sugar. It helps hold it steady. I hope I have helped. If you have questions you can feel free to ask.
Hugs, Theresa
I agree with th blood sugar possibility but if you were doing quite a bit of bending over and standing up, it could also have been blood pressure related. Try this little test:
Lay flat on your back, like in bed or on the sofa. Sit up realtively quickly and see if you get light-headed or dizzy. You might also try sitting to standing and bending over to touch your toes, hold for a few seconds and then stand erect. If dizziness or feelngs like you might blackout occur, it is related to blood pressure not adjusting correctly, maybe dipping too low at times. A doctor/surgeon should be consulted soonest.
I had this happen to me the day after surgery while at the hospital and a couple of occurrences rather randomly at home since. Hence, I am still on 1 of the previous 4 blood pressure meds pre-op to keep that regulated.
Take care of yourself and don't be a hero or feel like yuo are bothering someone about someting unimportant. You are worthy getting the attention you may need. What if it happens when you are driving or on stairs?

great point joe. moving to quickly, standing up or straightening up to quickly can cause dizziness. i should have thought of this as it has happened to me before too due to blood pressure. and what a great suggestion you offered. another reason why I LOVE this board. so many great suggestions and advice. i agree that the dr should be contacted as it could be high blood pressure, low blood sugar or even something else.

Cathy, it is most likely blood sugar because blood pressure would not make you feel weak and after a low blood sugar attack it can take a little while to feel like your old self - it is not instantaneous.
You can buy glucose pills at the pharmacy to keep when you are feeling like this. For RNYers it is NOT a good idea to drink 8 ounces of orange juice as the sugar content will probably cause us to dump - you don't need that on top of feeling weak lol!!
Also call you doctor and have it checked out as it could be a few other things too - but best to have it checked. The suggestion of a small diabetic kit and test your level next time you feel dizzy etc is an excellent one... thst would help or eliminate the blood suger theory...

I hadn't even thought about the dumping thing regarding the juice. I just drink that if my sugar gets too low now. I guess I will have to find other things to consume for low sugar once I have my surgery. Again, another reason I love this sight. Someone is always got your back and is always 1 step ahead of someone!! LOL!
I was on isulin overnight and a ton of medications through out the day - I am so happy to not do it anymore... I never took another pill from the surgery - some people took i for a while and then they gradually stopped -and some people are still diabetic on medication - but a lot less - you can never tell - I hope the surgery helps you... :-)

Cathy everyone has told you what they think and they are right. Most drug stores has kits to check your sugar and they range in price so I would go and get one and check it when you have the problems and for a few days after so that you can have a record of it and please call your doctor and let him/her know what is happening. They can tell you better than we can and like camerns mom I am a type 2 diabetic and what you describe is what we have to look for when ours drops to quick. When it does drop you need to try to consume at least 15oz of a carbs and it takes about 3 times to get it to where you need it to be and that is between 70-150. I hope this helps. you can also go to webmd and it will help you.
