What to tell someone who says VSG is irreversible?

My MIL lives in another state and is worried that I have chosen VSG because it's irreversible.  I know this already and have made by decision based on a lot of information gathering and soul searching.  So what did you say to people who voiced this concern? Thanks for any input you might have!  I'm just not sure how to handle this! Kim

Why would I want something that was reversible-- to gain my weight back?  That's what I've said to people in the past.  I have obesity which is a disease and I have dealt with this long enough to know that I need more dramatic measures than other "overweight" people (yeah, right, like 10 lbs is overweight!) need. :)

Well no one knows about my surgery except my daughter who will be going thru it with me, my husband, and a very good girl friend. I have battled with my weight all my life publicly, this will be private. Personally, I'm glad I want that "hungry" side of my stomach gone forever. Now I only have to deal with my brain! LOL

Well, my answer has been, in a worse case senario, say stomach cancer, a person can live without their stomach. So, I can't think of a medical reason why one would need the operation reversed, and why would anyone CHOOSE to have it reversed when it would mean they would likely regain the weight they wanted so badly to lose in the first place???? (that would be kind of like reversing a face lift or a tummy tuck!)

Just tell her that you have made a decision to permanently change your lifestyle to a more healthy way of living, and this is a tool that you will always have at your disposal.  This will help make the remainder of your life happy and healthy, and make sure you will be here to watch your children/grandchildren to grow.  AND it will help you to model good nutritional behaviors for the people who's lives you touch everyday!

Kim, Tell her, thank you for her concern, but you have researched it and made your decision. I also kept my surgery very private.  I had dealt with the pain and suffering of obesity for far too long. Best Wishes, Chantay

skinnyminnie ain't alone, MarloT,... tee hee hee.  Not only funny, but, it'll appeal to the MIL's classic need to be "right".  Brilliant!

I love your attitude MarloT. Even your quote with your signature is funny. I do believe I have said something very similar  MANY times as I was heading past my hubby with a wrench or power drill.......he he.
