What to tell someone who says VSG is irreversible?
I'd probably just say, "Yes.. you're right. And people have been living with partial gastrectomies since the late 1800s."
Lap-Band June 14, 2001. Dr. Rumbaut, Monterrey, Mexico.
Lap-Band removed after 7 years and converted to Sleeve Gastrectomy on July 7, 2008 by Dr. Roslin. I've had three happy healthy Lap-Band babies.... and one VSG baby. 5 years out from revision to VSG. Gained 55 pounds in past 5 months, now considering DS. :(
My mom weighed over 200lbs and dieted over and over. She ended up having most of her stomach removed due to severe ulcers, back in the early 70's. She's just about as healthy as a horse, other than the bout with cancer a few years back and age related things i.e. cataracts. She's stayed under 140 since then and only takes some TUMS and 1 vitamin a day along with her darn McDonald's biscuit/sauage, donuts, cakes, etc.!!! I can't see how she stays so skinny!
Funnily enough when I said something to my mom about having VSG, she acted like it was a big deal?? I said to her: It's like this, we have a certain size stomach and stretch it with overeating. Having the VSG is just removing the part that we stretched out and returning our stomach to it's normal size so we'll eat normal size meals. She's better with it now.
Have to remember, she went into her surgery back then to deal with severe pain and life threatening issues (twice the stomach opened up with holes and allowed acid into the body cavity, nearly killing my mom), so she had no knowledge that she would have some issues i.e. acid reflux, smaller meals and lactose intolerant. As if smaller meals is an issue LOL! We prepare ourself for the surgery and go into it knowing we will be changed. She didn't other than the fact that her ulcers would be gone.
