Hi guys,  i'm 3 weeks post op today, had a pretty easy time of it, surgery was fine and after about 7 days I was virtually back to normal, i've lost 39 lb which I'm delighted with but I was told that weeks 1 & 2 should just be soups and smooth yoghurts and weeks 3 & 4 should be blended food (baby food consistancy) I have been having blended carrots potatoes and some chicken or fish, finding it hard to enjoy this and  I've been having really bad diarrehea (not pleasant).  Any idea's would be greatfully received.........please.

Sometimes, if you have been on antbiotics post-op, you get rid of some of the biota necessary for proper digestion. This can cause loose bowels.  You might try some probiotic yoghurt, or check with your PCP for a solution. As for the food issues, have you tried some No Sugar added applesauce? Or SF jello and/or puddings?  You can add SF chocolate syrup to your protein drinks, or other SF syrups.   A mini-blender allows you to reduce the consistancy of foods (add liquids while blending) that are too firm for your present regime. Yeah, I tried a bunch of my favorite foods, blended, just to see what I should stock up on before surgery.  No joy.  I plan to drink a lot of Soup At Hand, shakes, and protein bullets the first week, and when I go to purees, I will probably be eating a lot of protein-added puddings, mashed potatoes, and refried beans.  Can you take Immodium, or is that a no-no (NSAID)?  Most folks are stuffed up around this time, so you may be luckier than you think!

I had th esame problem-was told it was normal-I was told to try and make things a little thicker so they wouldn't go through me so quickly-as you increase your food this will go away. Jeanne

Cottage cheese, egg salad, and tuna salad.
Yum.

And I'd do some yogurt with some good live bacteria if you've done nothing but runs since surgery, that said, liquids in, liquids out.  Enjoy it while you can. Most of us have the opposite problem....
Good luck.

Thanks guys for all your advice, guess its still early doors to expect everything to tick along as before !!  Must just say its lovely that you took the time to reply I really appreciate it.  There's not the same support groups in the UK and OH is all I have and i'd be lost without it.  I spend many an hour reading lots.  Thanks to everyone.

Hi, I'm not even a week post - op, but have had the same issue since coming home.  My dr. said to dilute the protein bullets more & see if that helped (it hasn't).  I was curious about other's experiences w/ this too, as I had always heard about the constipation issue.  Of course, when I re-read my info packet fr. the dr. - this was listed as a possible affect.  I just hadn't remembered it before.   I figured on Monday when it's a week, I will call my dr & see if I can take some Pepto Bismol or Immodium.  I agree it's not pleasant!  That's probably my biggest complaint right now!! Good luck!!

I had the loose stools for about 4-6 wks post op.  Even now at 2 and half months out my stools still are loose from time to time.  I will admit that when I started eating more solid foods my stools became more solidified too.  Also, my new tummy doesn't like milk products.  When I make my protein shakes with skim milk it starts the stomach issues again.

Thanks for the reassurance that it happens to others, now your 2 1/2 months down the road how is it working for you, can you eat a pretty normal diet yet ?
