Cravings

I know that Cokes are not good for you and you shouldn't drink them but before my surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago I was a very heavy Coke drinker.  I've heard that you should not drink Cokes after surgery for several differnt reasons.  I've heard because of the carbs (which I can understand) and I also heard because of the carbonation.  I've researched and Coke Zero does not have any carbs but is carbonated.  Would it be okay to drink it, in moderation of course?  I guess I'm pulling at straws here but I was wondering if any of you guys have this same craving.

Needing a little support!!!!

Aloha Ann- Even the diet sodas are  a bad choice. The carbonation notwithstanding ( streches the stomach perhaps?),  they contribute to insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. Something about the body getting tricked when you have something sweet that has no calories. Here's a good summary:

I stopped my 6-8 Diet Pepsi per day ( the big 20 ozers) 2 months pre op and can't even stomach the thought of cracking one now. Decaf iced tea, and iced water with a squeeze of lemon are about all I drink now. I never liked milk or coffee ( unless it has Bailey's and Tequilla in it- then I'll make a coffee exception!).

Step away from the sodas! XOXOLori

Thanks for your response Lori.  I too drank around 6 Cokes (the real thing) prior to surgery, I quit two days before surgery.

I was diagnosed with Insulin Resistance a few years ago, which is one reason I decided to have this surgery.

I think I tried to give up too much at once, I quit smoking on Oct 9th, I quit drinking Cokes on Oct 21 and I had surgery on Oct. 23rd.  I'm having a stressful day today and I think I could drink at 20 oz Coke right now . . . . . . uuuggghhh.

WOW, Ann, you like to torture yourself, huh? I was not so brave, and weaned off over about a month so I wouldn't get caffeine headaches. I feel for you! XOXOLori

Nope no sodas!  There are so many better things for us that that BUT I had the cravings too!  I slowed my drinking down about 1 month before surgery and so when I did have surgery I wouldnt have that bad headache!
I craved the beegeebers out of my diet coke and have, on a few occasions taken a few sips....BLECH!  They just dont taste the same now and I'm almost 4 months out and I dont crave them at all anymore.
You will get over the cravings for it, I just hope you are lucky like me and you wont like it now that you have had surgery :o)

I wouldn't... no way, no how... i think you have to decide if you're really into this VSG or not... And if you are, then don't cave. The good thing about cravings is that they go away eventually.

If I could quit coffee and cigarettes for this thing, you can quit pop!!!

Nope no soft drinks, diet or otherwise.  Start weaning yourself off of it asap.  I was a HUGE soda drinker before surgery.  The only time I have "slipped" since surgery was when I accidentally took a tiny sip of my DB's fountain Coke drink.  That totally freaked me out.  Thank goodness I didn't get sick d/t the sugar and carbonation.  Also, it's easy to get dehydrated and you don't want to add even diet pop into the mix until you are fully able to get in the liquid requirements.
