My NUT says no shakes in the morning!

I've been meaning to ask you guys what I should do about this.

At my 6wk appt, the NUT said that we should only have protein shakes at night, as a snack, and that its most important to have solid food in the morning, because thats when your metabolism is highest.  Well, this throws my day off, because every morning, I have coffee with UNJURY.  It is a great way to jump start the protein for the day, and also helps with the liquids, which I am still struggling with.  But now I feel like I can't have that, so I have been trying to eat solid food in the morning, and I just can't.  I have never been a morning eater, and it is REALLY hard for me to get anything down.  Seriously, it would take me a half hour to eat an egg, and thats only 6gm of protein!  I end up having to leave for school or work, and throwing over half of my solid breakfast away (where I can bring the coffee with me, and drink on the way).
Do you guys drink your protein in the morning?  Do you think it is affecting your metabolism or weight loss?
What should I do? This sucks.

I've never heard such nonsense.  Do what's best for you.  It seems throwing away 1/2 your solid breakfast isn't helping you.  I drink my protein shake either all for breakfast and a mid morning snack or 1/2 for breakfast and the other 1/2 at night.  I mix my cappuccino protein powder with water and it really does taste like a real cappuccino.  It gives me almost 50g of protein.  I, too am not a real breakfast person so this works out great for me.  I would ask your surgeon about this.  Sometimes those nutrionists don't know what the heck they're talking about.

Honestly? Many other docs say, get your protein in any way. And in general a doc is a doc.....just do whats natural to you!:)

Well, I am almost 10 months out and I am no NUT, nor do I offer medical advice, but..... I have had a shake for breakfast about half of the time since I had surgery. Sometimes it is a protein bar. Other times it is coffee with or without protein in it.   I am NOT a breakfast eater either.  You can look at my ticker and decide if it has affected my weight loss!
I am not saying go against any medical advise, but seems to me that protein shakes are OK, ESPECIALLY early out.

Good luck,
Brooke

First just let me say that I'm pre-op. I'm not a breakfast person at all. So my nut said that the would be the perfect time for me to start with the protein shake. So I have a protein shake. Now I have started getting a little appetite about an 1-2 hrs later. Skye

Drink your shake.  LOTS of people mix SlimFast with their coffee, or drink shakes for breakfast, who are in maintenance.  It may not be optimal in your NUTs view, but if it works for you that's what you should do.  Since this is a lifestyle and not a diet, sometimes you have to do the best you can even if that's not what the doctor advises.  Honestly, I've seen so many different rules and plans and guess what?  Everyone ends up losing weight, regardless.  I think some of the nit picky stuff they come up with is frankly kind of silly.
At or below goal since 5/08....without mal-absorption!

Aloha KRH- This would be news to me- I drink my protein shake in the morning on my way to work out. I like my yogurt later mid morning and I can drink this in the car dropping kids at school, etc- very portable. I also don't like to eat carbs before I work out- I've read that the insulin released interferes with lipolysis, and I haven't had any shaky hypoglycemic type episodes in almost 6 months. Some of those protein shakes have more calories than an egg anyway- so why not drink them first thing in the morning. It hasn't interfered with my loss doing it this way. I'm interested to hear from another nutritionist? XoLori

Hi
My nutrionist said that I should not have shakes at all once i got off of the nutrional liquid stage. She said they would not help with the weight loss. But reading what everyone else has on their plates each day  - I made a decision to ignore her advice.

My drama I have is the optifast shake is quite high in carbs - 17.2 protein and 15 of carbs. This worries me as i struggle to keep my carbs each day under 50. So i need to look for a new shake brand.

Do what feels right to you.

regards
Jackie

I like the RTD EAS Myoplex Carb Control shakes.  I love the chocolate and the vanilla but am not too fond of the strawberry.  The one I buy is 25 g protein and 5 carbs in 11.4 oz.   It goes down easily as it has no after-taste to me.  I buy them at Publix and they come in a 4 pack.  I drink mine for breakfast or for my morning snack.
