Protein bullets at COSTCO ?
I talked to my nut about the protein bullets last week. She's not a fan. She says that they are collagen based (some may not be, you just have to read the ingredients), so you don't actually absorb all the protein. She said it should be 100% Whey protein. Even if it says Whey on the tube, it might only have a little. I was bummed to learn this, because they were working so well for me. I wish I would have asked her about how much of the protein is absorbed. Didn't think of it at the moment. Maybe my Nut is nuts, but just wanted to let you know what I was told about them. I think I'll still drink them, cuz any extra protein is better than none. I definitely can't seem to get all my protein from food alone. Can't eat That much.
There is a lot of controversy around the bullets and the quality of the protein in them. I used them almost exclusively early in my recovery and they were almost the only protiein source at first and I had no problems.
I think it MIGHT be more of a problem with the malabsorbtive procedures but I am not sure. I am not saying they are the best source of protein but 25 gms of not perfect protein is a damn sight better than 0 gms of great protein. My favorite response to the whole best protein question is that the best protein is the one you will actually use.

Whatever you do is it truthful, necessary and kind?
Does your nut perhaps work in an office that sells Unjury or Optifast. Perhaps has handouts or samples from them?
There is apparently some bad press/ word of mouth out there from the competition. New Whey is complete protein in a collagen base so that they can concentrate that much protein in such a little space. All essential amino acids are present in sufficient quantity to keep us very healthy even if they are our only protein sources.

It is a pretty well accepted fact from the medical/nutritionist community that the bullets are BAD. The protein IS collagen, which my NUT said is simply WATER. I had to be readmitted to the hospital at 5 weeks for SEVERE DEHYDRATION, and when I came home, I was using the bullets as my main source of protein, because of some info I got on the message board (not this one, but another one). Within a week, I felt REALLY BAD and almost got dehydrated again.
DO NOT USE THESE as 42 grams of high-quality protein. I found out the hard way and want to spare anyone else from becoming weak and having to go back to the hospital! If you wanna drink them just as liquid, go ahead, but don't depend on getting 42 grams of protein from them!
Also the GNC store advised me NOT to buy the bullets, either. They keep theirs in the back of their store, because they said hardly anyone every buys them, for the same reason the NUT gave.

Please dont jump me but I am wondering how dehydration and how well a protein works are connected? They definitly do not have your complete fluid source in them as small as they are. I use the bullets or shakes as I feel to supplement. I also eat at leat 40 Grams of protein a day from food.

So I was basically getting NO sustenance at all. Believe me, they are connected. I spent 4 days in the hospital as proof! Have you ever had a pick line put in you? Let me tell you, you wanna avoid it. They run an IV line through your upper arm into the superior vena cava about your heart, then pump you full of proteins, sugar, electrolytes, in other words, FOOD. It is a scary thing to experience, and it took me 3 and a half days to fell better. Better to sprinkle unflavored Unjury in your food and drink protein drinks, if you can stand them. It's up to you, but I would hate for someone to have to go through what I have.
Every time this comes up peoiple keep sayinmg theya re bad YET there is no scientific proof they are GOOD OR BAD. Honestly I don't know. I know I used them the first couple months post-op and my labs have alwaways been good. Clearly they are better than nothing and I do encourage you to get as much proteinas possiblefrom real food but I also know how hard it is early out. I was using one of these day to help give me the boost to get close to 70grams. after 3 months I have been able to get all my protein from food.
Thanksfor the info! we dont have Costco here but I am going to LA and I will get some when I am there.
For here I found them online, the 42 grams ones, 12 for 24.99 and free shipping for orders over $100. since I have a close friend having surgery as well we are going to split orders

Not really. My NUT says that they are fine. They are not designed to be your only source of nutrition or protein, but for a few months of our lives when we are having trouble getting in protein from food sources, they can work for you.
My surgeon says that having a bullet a day is a good way to leave room for more veggies because you don't have to get as much protein as food.
And they aren't the only ones who say things like this. I don't think it's accepted in the medical community that they are bad at all. I think they are controversial and you will get many different opinions, even in the medical community.
Personally, at this point in my life, I can't stand them, so I use protein shakes and protein drinks. Btw, the protein in drinks like Healthwise protein drinks includes hydrolyzed gelatin -- which is what collagen turns into when processed a certain way. Yet no one has a hissy fit over how bad they are.
"The protein IS collagen, which my NUT said is simply WATER."
I'm sorry, but if your NUT really said that collagen is water and you didn't just misunderstand her, then I'd fire her and and find a NUT with a clue. Collagen is a form of protein and it's one we *need*. It's part of our connective tissues. It is no****er.
