Ladies - period, the pill, contraceptives post surgery

Hey all,
I have been taking birth control pills which regulate my period. I take them for 3 weeks, then the week I don't take them, I usually have a light period. Well my surgery was during the end of week 2 and I continued to take the pills every single day, no problem. Well my period started a week early! Is this because my body didn't absorb the birth control pills the way it should. The pre-op nurse had said it was ok to take the birth control pills because they were so small.

It's not like I'm going to have sex any time soonish because of the pain, but I was thinking about using condoms for the first 3 months anyway on TOP of the birth control pills. I wanted to double up the protections because my dr. told me that if you accidentally get pregnant in the first 3 months, it is 99% likely the child will die. Now I'm thinking that my body isn't absorbing the pill properly. I will address this when I have my checkup on monday, but just wanted to see what you guys thought.

I was informed by my surgeon that the shock of surgery almost always leads to an early mentral cycle even when your on the birth control pill..... and that I need to pack personal items for my stay in hospital...i laughed and said 'ppffft, i'm as regular as clockwork and will only be week two on my bcp so that won't be an issue" and he said 'don't say I didn't warn you'.

Sure enough, day after surgery lets just say I was pleased I took his advise.

My cycle has changed a fair amount since my surgery...heavier and spotting mid cycle for a week. I'm nine months out and this isn't going away so I'm quite nervous about what this means.

Interesting. thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one. When I saw spotting I was like "what??". They didn't warn me, but I just figured it was from the surgery.

Re:  Your period changes.  I asked my gynecologist friend this morning.  She said this could mean something, anything or nothing to worry about but to please see a gynecologist and find out.

Every surgery I have I usually will stop taking my pills so I can have a period before surgery cause I hear that most women no matter get their periods soon after surgeries.  If I were you I'd probably start a fresh pack if not you might have 2 back to back periods.

Hormones are definitely affected by surgery and by rapid weightloss. I actually quit taking the pill about 1 month after surgery, because I had 2 periods almost back to back. Just enough gap to know that it was a different one instead of one really long one... Anyways, I went to my PCP for my annual check-up and explained the situation. He informed me that fat cells carry excess estrogen, so with the rapid weight loss, I am losing estrogen and therefore promoting a period. Not that I am necessarily ovulating. He said that since I had quit taking the pill, I needed to use a 2nd form of contraceptive for a month until I was back on track. Otherwise the stork might be visiting... If I had not stopped, I would have been fine to just keep taking the pill without worrying about a 2nd form of contraceptive.

That was what I was told, so I hope that helps.

Good to know!
I was wondering why I started my period 11/30 and didn't get off until 12/13. Not to mention I was on my period when I had my surgery on 11/11

I've had my period every other week since surgery, despite being on the pill. I talked to my gyn about it and she told me that the bleeding is not a sign my body is not absorbing it and that it's not necessary to use back-up birth control. No buns in the oven (yet) and god knows I'd know very early because I have a period to miss all the damn time!  I still worry about it because I'm a worrywart but my bf hates condoms so...we're going with the gyn's advice

BTW, angienichole, that's interesting about estrogen from the fat cells promoting periods. And good to know that it does not necessarily mean I'm ovulating!!

I have had two other surgeries before each one I had my cycle. Two days after each surgery I had my cycle once more its the stress on the body. And all the blood that sits around in your body while they are cutting, and cleaning. Stuff like that, its gotta go somewhere, and that's the easiest place.

Normally (at least for me) the post surgery period is short and starts heavy but for only a day or so. Then almost like magic its really lite then bam gone. No more then 4 days. Keeping in mind most of my cycles bleeding run 7-9 days.

I run clock work the 14th of EVERY month I start, I had surgery once on the 3rd bam the 4th I was bleeding, then once again on the 14th. My second surgery was on the 20th. I had just finished yes you guessed it the 21st I was down for the count. Then the following 14th once more.

I don't see how this could be any different.

(Plus I just had an IUD places so lets see how that works with it LOL)

God bless our troops
