IV fluid weight gain?

Hi all, 4 days post op and feeling very good. I have two quick question for you guys. How much weight did you guys gain from all the IV fluids and how long did it take you to get back to your pre-op weight?

I went into surgery at 301 on mon., and left hospital at 309 on wed.. I know it's normal to gain weight with IV fluids and not worried about it at all, just currious as to how many days it took before you noticed pounds coming off. At the moment I'm walking a lot and focusing on getting my fluids in, then proteins. I was on a 2 week liquid diet before surgery.

Thanks all

Alex

I was at or higher than my pre-op weight for about 4 days after surgery. By the one week mark, post-op, I had lost about 6.6 lbs. So it took 5 or 6 days before I saw any loss at all, then it was fairly rapid for the next week or so. I think I lost 11 or 12 lbs total in the first 2 weeks.

By the way, it took me several weeks before the bloat and swelling went down in my belly, so even though I was losing weight, my pants were still pretty tight around my waist for the first 3 weeks. Don't get discouraged.

Hello!  Congratulations on your surgery.  Hope all went well!

I gained a whopping 13 pounds by the time I was discharged.  That was literally 13 pounds in the 1 single day I was in the hospital.  I also had some problems with my urine output but when I got home, I got rid of all that fluid.  It took me a while, about a week or so, before I could actually wear some of my shoes again.

Good luck!

Carole

Alex,

I remember thinking in the hospital that when I get home I am going to see a loss, but having had a band previously I also remembered that the loss can't be seen due to all the IV fluids. I would say that this time I didn't see weight loss of any kind until 5 days post op because of all the fluids that they pump you full of. Now one week out, I am down 7 pounds from my starting weight. I'll take it! Best Wishes to you!

Revision to Gastric Sleeve June 10, 2010 with band removal same day after five years of being banded. Loving my life so much more with the sleeve!

I weighed 13 lbs more when I came home from the hospital than I did when I went in. By my 1 week post op appt. I had lost that plus 8 more lbs.
