I think the sleeve is going to be the one for me. Bur from what I am reading you have to go in for another surgery in like 16 to 18 months? What is all that about?

It used to be a 2 part procedure but now is also stand alone procedure which has same results as RNY.

statistics on the sleeve show about 92% no longer need meds for diabetes. The DS surgery has a nearly 100% rate. So its the best for getting rid of diabetes but its a more complex surgery than the sleeve and has more issues. Read about it on this board under the ds forum or elsewhere. YOu need to consult with a good barriatric surgeon to determine which surgery is best for you. The ds is usually more for higher weight people as those with only 100 or so pounds to lose are at risk for losing too much. If your doctor is recommending the sleeve, I would listen. and get a referral from him/her to a good local barriatric surgeon. most of them put on seminars and go and learn about the procedures. read the blogs of people on this site who have had vsg and who have had the ds. also, a good info source is the web site of lapsf.com which has a comparative chart of the procedures. good info even if you don't use these surgeons.

While I was not a diabetic, i had other health issues related to weight and i have now reached goal and resolved those health issues and feel like a million bucks. my older brother is a type 2 diabetic and is heavier than i was and he is heading for the sleeve. good luck on your journey. its worth doing. diane

I see everything for type 2 nothing for type 1. Not very many doctors here in the Houston area that do DS surgery. Not going to Brazil.

Being a nurse, I guess that I just don't understand how VSG can cure type 1 diabetes.Type 1 diabetes is a disease where the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. How can having VSG surgery fix that? Many, many type 1 diabetics are not overweight at all. Are you sure you have type 1 diabetes? Most of the time this is diagnosed in childhood or as an adolescent. Being on insulin does not mean it is type 1. If if is type 2, I can totally understand how VSG could help. I guess I see now that your pancreas does not work at all. I would ask the DR to explain to me how VSG is going to cure my diabetes. I am curious.

I don't know. But everything I have heard it does. Even some of the posts they said it cured it.
