Ordering in lunch 1/coworkers. We're getting sushi... can't wait! I'll probably have 2 pieces of a california roll and stick to sashimi (w/very little soy sauce - if any) for the rest of my meal. Does anyone else eat sushi/sashimi & know the nutrition facts?

What is your dietician's opinion of it?

I've heard people rant and rave against/for..

My dietican will not allow us rice or pasta.  I have been doing low carb since I joined the WLS journey.  I am six months post op.

I love sushi, but am I afraid it might get stuck.  If I were to eat at a japanese restauant, I would have grilled chicken Yahatori (sp).

The sashimi is a fantastic choice and GREAt protein. My program does not allow rice (and I don't miss it one little bit) so I would avoid the rolls if I went to eat sushi. Besides, it would fill you up leaving much less room for the protein rich foods you need right now. If it were me, I'd just stick with the sashimi.

I was allowed 'soft flaky fish' on my 'soft foods' stage. Tuna, in particular, is very soft, even raw, but it's not really a mushy food raw. Definitely on the stage just past mushies it would be allowed.

My favorite thing to order at a Japanese restaurant is Poki tuna salad. Even if they don't have it on the menu, they can usually make it for you. It is tuna, seaweed, onions, sesames seeds a little soy sauce and some sesame oil. It is great for you and tastes awesome. Ask them to make it with low-sodium soy sauce.

Sashimi is a reliable go-to for me - I love it, it is easy to digest, and has tons of protein. And, i have as much soy and wasabi as I want - even if I retain water for a day or so because of the sodium, this isn't going to make me fat.

I do love sushi, but have very little. One local restaurant has brown rice sushi, so I might get a roll and spread it out over three meals that day. My local place has a roll with lots of fish and avocado and lemon, but very little rice, and I do the same with that. I also sometimes order a hand-cone with chopped cucumber instead of rice at the bottom.

Pre op I would order one order of toro sashimi and 2-3 rolls and eat all of it for one meal.

Now I order one order of toro sashimi and 1 roll and this usually amounts to 3 meals.

Amazing!

Sushi is VERY high in carbs.  My nutritionists (yes plural) strongly recommend that it not be eaten until goal.

Sashimi is almost pure protein.  Some does have some fat (like salmon), but it is the good kind of fat.

Sashimi is a great choice. and if you order rolls, I just unwrap them to avoid the rice. Some places have a Naruto roll, which is a roll wrapped in cucumber instead of rice.

But don't be surprised if you can't eat that much. My limit is about 3 pieces of sashimi OR 4 or 5 pieces of a 6 piece roll. This surgery is really something...I remember really being able to eat a LOT of sushi pre-surgery!
