The Sleeve is no longer considered an experimental surgery and is getting picked up more and more by insurance companies.  Even those that have denied it, many are ok'ing it when they have been appealed by the insured.  My surgeon does bariatrics up to 75 years old.

I had surgery March 21, 2011 and am 65 years old with diabetes, heart issues, p.a.d, hypertension. My diabetes and hypertension are already gone, and off heart medication. I feel great. Highly recomend the surgery. My surgeon will also go to age 80.

According to one of theleading VSG surgeon's sites, the sleeve is actually the best proceedure for people over 50 yrs old... they go on to note:

Studies have shown that even modest weight loss of 10 pounds (range 0 to 34 pounds) in patients 60 years of age or greater can result in significant improvements in diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglycerides, physical performance, pedometer-measured step counts, and step climb and descent. Self-rated physical functioning and vitality (SF-36 quality of life questionnaire) also significantly improved.

Unfortunately there's no specifics in terms of exact age or if there's a limit, but I'm sure that's something you could discuss with a surgeon if your husband is interested in learning more.

Good luck!

I'll be 55 in June and thank goodness I am starting this now instead of later.  And I thought I was one of the oldest on the forum having this.  Good to know there are others older than me.  Jackie

I'm 55 and through this forum I have learned so much and can't wait for approval and date of surgery.  This forum is a God send for me.  Any question I can think of has been answered here there is such a wealth of information and everyone is so positive and helpful.

This is a fantastic surgery, young or old.

The only thing is, older people may not drop weight at the lightning speed as some younger sleevers - but he is a man, so his weight loss may still be fast, even if he is older.  All good questions for the dr.

I'm 50 and I'm losing steadily if not really fast, and I'm still delighted!

Good luck in presenting him with the facts.  I hope he goes for it!

Ask your husbands primary insurance what their upper age limit is and if they even cover the sleeve.  If they don't cover it and/or he is overage then the decision has been made for you and you won't even need to discuss it with your husband.  Age limits differ from company to company, and it's usually between 60-70.  I have Medicare advantage and their limit was 65.  I hope all works out well for you and your husband.  BTW...66 is not too old for the surgery!
