This reader's comment really hit home for me:
Correlation is not causation. Those who drink a soda a day probably have more unhealthy lifestyles than those who don't, and thus develop heart disease and diabetes at higher rates. It doesn't mean the soda causes the diabetes, nor does it mean that giving up the soda, while not changing anything else, will fix the problem.
I'm healthier today than I was at 270lbs even with having a soda a day. Am I 100% perfect, or lead a 100% healthy lifestyle? NO, but I am without a doubt healthier than what I was at 270lbs.
Thanks for sharing.

I understand that completely!! However, many of the people who are ASKING or RANTING about wanting a soda are VERY early out! Perhaps, once they're are closer to their goal or in the maintenance stage, a soda may be okay; but starting a bad habit (bad in that it's so early out) so early out I think is NOT a very wise idea!

5 1/2 months in and my NUT told me from the first that a soda was okay. i generally just have a can of diet coke after lunch and that's it, but it makes me happy and i stay on track the rest of the time.
no soapbox, just reporting how it's been for me! to each her/his own. and the causation/correlation thing is definitely something to keep in mind!
thanks for the article. i gobble up all the info i can (and it has no calories!!!)

I thought the best part of the article was that in between the headlines for You'll Be Fatter and You'll Probably Have Diabetes was an embedded link for "The 50 Best Cookie Recipes On The Internet" which made me chuckle.
It's like when people post on OH about being in a stall and the advertising banner flags weight-loss pills by some infomercial guru.
Advertising is so weird.
