Did I ever really introduct myself? lol
Im not sure if I did. Pretty sure I just jumped in and started yaking..
So, Im Paige..Mommy to an almost 4 year old little boy. He is totally the light of my life. I am also a pediatric nurse. I work for a pediatrician prescribed extended care, which basically means a daycare for really really sick, sometimes terminal children. I also run a pretty successful "mommy blog" and give away lots of cool stuff if you want to check it out www.thenursemommy.com. I will be 30 in August...holding off on having more kids until I get this surgery and lose weight. My hubby is a sweetie and totally supportive....he is also a nurse. My Mom is my best friend and after losing my Dad two weeks before my son was born, Mom and I have become even closer.
Been a "Big Girl" forever. Seriously, born 8lbs 6 3/4 oz and stayed a big girl. I remember wearing a size 12 in womens in 5th grade. My first diet was at 11, and have been yoyoing ever since. Originally wanted lap band-but like many of you here learned more about it and realized the sleeve was right for me. My Mom and Sister both had the vertical banded gastroplasty so I have been witness to weight loss surgery my whole life (I was 5 when Mom got the surgery)
Anyway, Mom had a stroke, but is okay...Dad died of complications from open heart surgery. Needless to say, I want a healthier life than either of them...so I need this.
I have already found so much support from this board, and wanted to say Thanks to you all!

I can totally relate to the "Big Girl forever" comment. I have 4 half sisters who are all tall and skinny, so I've been the odd one out my whole life. My mom recently lost 65 lbs on her own with diet and excercise, which kinda made it even more obvious that I was overweight. I am so proud of my mom and she has inspired me to get healthy.
It's so great to have you a part of the OH family. Thanks for your wonderful, supportive comments!

I hear you... my dad was never in my life, but my mom suffered a debilitating stroke when I was just 3 months pregnant with my son (he just turned 5 last month). It was pretty much downhill from there as far as her health went... she suffered a heart attack 3 years later, then the breast cancer she'd beaten several years ago came back and metasticized in her bones. She passed away in August '09. She was a single mom and I was her only child, so to say that I lost not only my mom, but my best friend was an understatement.
If one good thing came out of all of her suffering it's that seeing how her poor health habits caught up to her was a real wake up call for me. I don't want to suffer the same fate (or subject my son to watching me go through it), and I know I would have if I kept traveling down the road I was on.
I've been overweight since I was 10... was a normal-sized kid before that (long story, best suited for a therapist's couch). The healthiest weight I ever got down to was 190 in my early 20s, but most of that loss came as the result of living the rock 'n roll lifestyle, traveling around with my favorite band as often as I could.
Once I noticed how much I had dropped, I started getting into the habit of continuing the trend on my own with diet and exercise and I was doing really well with it too... but then I met and fell in love with my husband. That crazy, emotional roller coaster that comes with all new relationships proved that while I had lost a lot of weight, I hadn't beaten down the emotional eating demons. Everything I lost came back, and then some... and then some more... and then some more.
So, long story short (too late), at 360, I finally decided that I needed to do something. Friends had a lapband and had decent success with it, so I started investigating and, like you, didn't like what I found. I eventually landed on the VSG and even though I'm only 4 weeks out, couldn't be happier with my decision.
ANYWAY... I can get a little long-winded at times, but thanks for the intro (you must be a saint to be able to emotionally handle that line of work... wow) and welcome to the board!
