Not hungry post-surgery

Hi guys -

I'm really pumped, have my surgery date set for right after the 4th.

Is it true that with VSG your feeling of hunger is greatly diminished?

In removing a portion of the stomach the hormone responsible for hunger (ghrelin) is reduced.
70% of VSG patients lose their hunger or have a diminished appetite .

This was the case for me. I didn't belive it could be possible before the surgery but I have not been hungry. It's easy to lose weight when you're not hungry all the time. Not being hungry and restrictions are great tools in losing weight,

Follow the plan your doctor gives you for eating post-op and you'll do great!

Thanks for the reassurance, George!  It's just an odd concept to be ... much less hungry.  Hard to imagine, I suppose.

When I spoke to pople who had the sleeve the "not being hungry" part was the hardest to understand. Initially I thought getting the sleeve would mean I would be thin but hungry all the time.

Friends with the sleeve set me straight, my doctor explained about the hormones and it all held true for me. I've not been hungry since surgery almost 2 years ago. I don't spend a lot of time thinking about food. I eat,  get full fast and that's it. I don't think about my next meal all day along and often skip meals or have to be reminded to eat because I get caught up in activities I could not participate in when I was obese.

It is an odd concept but it's amazing.

The sleeve allowed me to lose 100% of my excess weight and keep it off without a lot of effort.

Good luck,
George

Wow, George, that's amazing, thanks so much for sharing your experience with me.  Even when I'm fully complying with my diet, I keep thinking about the next food coming up... it can be depressing.  And you hit 100% too!  Your story is very encouraging.

Before the sleeve I was the same way always "thinking about the next food coming up". My day would revolve around food. Changing this behavior took time. There were days I found myself in the grocery store with a cart full of foods I could not eat or at a restaurant ordering too many appetizers. I ended up leaving the groceries and taking food home from the restaurant.

I also had to learn to not buy in large quantities since the food often went bad before I came close to finishing it. Now I freeze part of what I buy.

There's a learning curve with the sleeve but it's worth it.

I'm one week out and other than wanting something to chew on, I could care less about food. Granted I've only been at home and know once I'm reincorporated into my life the head hunger will kick in.

I am six months post op. About 3 months ago a coworker said "Come on noon, i'm hungry" I replied, "I haven't been hungry for 3 months" that was the first time it actually hit me. I am no longer hungry, it is absolutely wonderful, but i will say i have read about people still being hungry after this procedure.
I have not hit goal yet and don't know that i will, but i am slowly losing now but losing slowly is definetly better than gaining.
I absolutely love my sleeve!!!!!!!!!! can't wait to see you on the losers bench!

I'm coming up on 4 months out and still haven't felt hunger. It has been great except when I forget to eat for a few days....as long as I stay around people who get hungry or eat on a normal schedule, it isn't an issue but if I am alone for a few days, I won't remember to eat which is a problem.

Sorry to say I get hungry all the time.  Ferociously so.  Sucks.  Drinking water makes me feel hungry, which ****** me off and makes me want to drink less, which is a no-no.  Hope it straightens out.  Aside from a brief time post-op, I have always had an appetite and I have always gotten hungry.  My meals are mostly dense protein based, I still drink 2 shakes a day and I get in most of my water.  I take Prilosec.  IDK what the issue is.  I thank God I was in the right mindset to do this, because aside from the restriction, it's all me and my choices.
