Working out

I'm working out 5 days a week on the elliptical machine for one hour. However, I wish to lift weights again but many have told me to wait 6 months because it may cause a hernia. My surgeon recommended that I wait 6 weeks. What has been your experience?

I started weights at 3 weeks out with the ok of my Dr. He just told me to build it up slowly and easily, which I did. I did not do any twisting exercises until 6 weeks at my own choice. I have not had any problems.

My doctor cleared me for weight lifting, just no weights or movemetns involving my stomach like planks, sit-ups or crunches until I was 6 weeks out.

I started back lifting weights around 6 months out, more because I just didn't feel like than precautionary waiting period.

I haven't had a problem, started with higher rep lower weights lower sets (15,12,10), worked my way to sets of 10,8,6, embarked on a pyramid routine for a while (10,8,6,4,8,10), and am doing a 5x5 right now three days a week with three days of cardio.

I think you'll be fine if you don't get too heavy too quickly.  I lost a LOT of muscle along with weight so I started very slowly and light.
